January 1st 1972-Carole King's album "Music", her follow-up to "Tapestry", hits #1 in America where it would stay for the next three weeks. Although not quite as successful as it predecessor, the LP was said to have sold 1,300,000 copies in the #UnitedStates on the day it was released.

January 1st 1966 - The final episode of the US #TV show, The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet (with Ricky Nelson) is filmed. The show began as a radio series in 1944 and moved to television in 1952. The EP aired on March 26, 1966, concluding its 14-season run. #psychedelicjukebox #history

Jan 1 1964-The instrumental tracks for "Fun, Fun, Fun" by The Beach Boys were recorded at United Western Recorders in Hollywood. The song was written by #BrianWilson and Mike Love, and produced and arranged by Wilson. Also recorded in this session were the instrumental tracks for "Warmth Of The Sun"

January 1st 1962 - The Beatles attend a New Year's Day audition for Decca Records where they record fifteen songs. After reviewing their material, the company decided to sign Brian Poole And The Tremeloes instead.

January 1st 1956 - On the first day of the New Year, RCA released Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel". In 1999, the single would be certified multi-platinum for the second time.

January 1st 1959 - Johnny Cash plays one of his first jailhouse shows when he performs at San Quentin prison in San Rafael, California. Among those in the audience is 21-year-old Merle Haggard, who is serving time for burglary.

December 31st 1970 - With Melody Maker magazine reporting that The Beatles are looking for a new bass player, the Mirror picked up the story.

Paul McCartney files suit to dissolve The Beatles' corporation. It would take until December 29th, 1974 for the split to become final.

Dec 31st 1969 - At a New Year's Eve concert at the Fillmore East in New York City, Jimi Hendrix introduces his new side men, bassist Billy Cox and former Electric Flag drummer, Buddy Miles. The concert is recorded for the live album, "Band of Gypsys", which will reach #5 in the US and #6 in the UK.

Remembering Donna Summer Dec 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012 Singer, songwriter, & actress. She gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s "I Feel Love" 1977 laying the foundations for electronic dance music. Library of Congress added the song to the National Recording Registry

😢 December 31st ➦In 1985...singer Rick Nelson was killed when fire broke out aboard a private plane that was taking him to a New Year’s Eve performance in Dallas. His fiancee and five other people were also killed. The fire was caused by a malfunctioning gas heater.

December 31st 1971, David Clayton-Thomas and Fred Lipsius (alto sax-keyboards) play their last show with Blood, Sweat & Tears at a concert in Anaheim, California. Clayton-Thomas goes on to a solo career. #psychedelicjukebox #jazzrock

Guy Lombardo stopped hosting his famous New Year's Eve broadcasts after the one bringing in 1977, which was his 48th and final annual show, airing on CBS on December 31, 1976, from the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

Though the tradition started in radio in 1929, it moved to TV in 1956

December 30th 1978 - After selling over 35 million albums since forming in 1970, Emerson, Lake And Palmer announce that they are splitting up. Between 1970 and 1986, the band placed ten LPs on the UK chart and thirteen on the Billboard 200.

December 30th 1967, The #Beatles' "Hello Goodbye" becomes their 15th #1 single in the US. It was backed with ‘I Am The Walrus’, to the displeasure of John Lennon, who considered his song to be the superior of the two. Lennon later dismissed ‘Hello, Goodbye’ as “three minutes of contradictions"

Dec 30 1968, Peter Tork leaves The Monkees, paying $160,000 (approximately $1.49 million to $1.5 million today (late 2025/early 2026) to buy out his contract. He later said he was disappointed The Monkees had failed to make rock music a priority over show business. The band broke up 18 months later.

Dec 29th 1962: "Bobby's Girl" by Marcie Blane was high on the charts - made No. 2 on the Cash Box chart and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Blane was born in Brooklyn. As a favor to a friend, she recorded this track as a demo for Seville Records. Marcie, 81 years young, May 2025!

December 29 1973 - Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle" rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of a two week stay. The 30-year-old singer had been killed in a plane crash the previous September 20th after promising his wife Ingrid that he would take some time off to spend with his family.

We The People - American garage rock band from Orlando, Florida, that was formed in late 1965 and professionally active between 1966 and 1970.

We the People consisted of musicians drawn from a number of different Orlando-based garage bands. In the early 1960s, The Coachmen, a frat rock band.

December 29th 1971 Sha Na Na makes the big time tonight, headlining Carnegie Hall with host Keith Moon of The Who (a huge fan of the group, as it turns out). Moon even went so far as to follow the band on their 1972 European tour. He even had his own gold lamé suit!

Dec 29 1980 - Singer / songwriter Tim Hardin died of a heroin overdose in his Hollywood apartment. He is best remembered for "If I Were a Carpenter" (a hit for Bobby Darin in 1966 and The Four Tops in 1968) and "Reason to Believe". Performed at the Newport Folk Festival and at Woodstock.

December 29th 1965 - Two members of The Sir Douglas Quintet, Doug Sahm & Frank Morin, along with a third suspect, were arrested by Corpus Christi police for possession of marijuana. When they came to trial on March 23rd, 1966, all of them were cleaned up, hair cut, and got placed on probation.
