Jubes had a great morning but is having an awful evening due to the humidity that rolled in. Meanwhile, River and I went for an easy 2 mile run/walk. The difference between the two - an older dog in his end-of-life phase and a young dog working up to his prime - is jarring. #dogsofbsky #dogmom

One of today's small joys: finding this gorgeous red flower hiding along the riverbank. #joyisanactofresistance #summerdays

Happy Gotcha Day, Jubes!

There are so many stories I could share about this boy. But I'll tell you about his gentle, loyal, fearless, loving nature. How he's a fighter and a survivor. How he finds joy and excitement in life no matter what. I couldn't love him more.

Pooch25k Week 1 Day 1 done! River did great! Very responsive even when we came across bunnies (or they came across us). I need to talk to him more and get him used to direction: left, right, close, crossing over. #dog #dogmom #runningwithdogs #myjubes #myriver

So I've decided (again) that I'm going to start running with River (again), weather permitting. Morning walk with Jubes, morning run with River. We can do this. I just need to get my act together the night before. Tomorrow will be Day 1.

I originally started this post by vomiting some of my stress but you know what? That's MY stress and I'M responsible for managing it. Not you.

So here's me refocusing: Jubes has had a solid couple of days and I'm looking forward to starting Sunday enrichment drives with him. ❤

Today's joy in a chaotic world: I'm knitting! Now that I've figured out what I'm doing, it's calming in a similar but different way than crochet. I have to really be in the moment.

And it's just for me! I'm not creating to sell, I'm creating to create.

I've started taking my boys on walks before the day gets too warm. I didn't realize how much I miss starting the day like that. My favorite part so far: Jubes' occasional after-walk zoomies ❤

My boys ❤

Jubes' last vet appointment was hard. I know my time with him is limited. I'll take every day, every hour, every minute I can with him. And moments like this are far and few and precious.

My boy. Jubes is struggling with his mobility and with pain more often lately. I took him to the vet today and we're now giving him two daily meds to help with pain and inflammation on top of his monthly injection, and the vet made sure I knew we're in the palliative phase of his care. I'm not ready

I don't know what I thought today would be but it's a day for reading a dog book (which is FABULOUS) while denned up with my boys. Perfect.

The book is Winterdance by Gary Paulson. It's about our relationship with dogs and the Iditarod race. I highly recommend.

I took Jubes on his walk today. We (okay, I) helped a baby turtle across the road and we (okay, I) saw this beautiful specimen watching us. Jubes almost stepped on him. Never even noticed.

Also, degenerative disc disease in dogs sucks.

One year ago, I brought this gangly, thin, isolated, people-neutral, easily overwhelmed puppy home. He's the sweetest and gentlest boy who loves to sploot in a good patch of grass, play with me in the snow, terrorize sprinklers, and loves a morning session of snuggles. Happy Gotcha Day, River. <3

So I've been tired a lot. Exhausted. Sleeping 10+ hours. I've blamed it on a lot of things - years of trauma, grief, depression, perimenopause. And I'm sure they all play a part. BUT about 4 weeks ago I started incorporating more fruits and veggies into my diet again and this week I HAVE ENERGY!

I feel like I've reached a transition point. The last couple of years have been... something. The Tower - illusions spun by others as well as by me - crumbling and falling, a foundation laid bare. I can breathe, stretching and not feeling walls around me. I see The Star in the sky and reach upwards.

Apocrypha: I took a walk without my dogs. I wanted to focus on what I was experiencing instead of what they were experiencing. Gulls on the river, snowdrops, crocuses, a lone dandelion, the warmth of the sun, a cornucopia of chirping birds. #signsofspring #renewal

Today's nourishment has already included birdwatching with coffee followed by a short hike to take a gander at migrating swans. Highlights of the birds I saw: male and female downy woodpecker, male and female red breasted woodpecker, and a Cooper hawk in the distance. #birdwatching #hiking

I've been thinking about nourishment lately and asking myself what does it mean to nourish both my body and soul? Today, nourishment looked like taking Jubes on an adventure after his vet appointment. #adventureswithjubes #dogsky #nourishment

I stepped away from social media for a while. Between depression, grief, the cold, house issues, and the shitshow that is the U.S., I just needed to take a pause. As much as I could, anyway, and remind myself the I can only do what I can do. And that counts for something.

Current WIP. #fibermagic

Took what will probably our last good walks for a handful of days with the snowstorm and accompanying cold snap coming through. Over a mile for each boy. I would have walked longer with Jubes but sniff walks are SLOW and I was COLD

Took my boys on their walks today before the weather takes a nosedive. We'll be able to go out tomorrow, too, and maaaayyyybbeee Sunday. As long as it isn't too windy.

The ice on the river has been ebbing and flowing; I'll be interested to see what it looks lot after this coldsnap.

River and I joined two of his sisters for a snowy walk/hike this past weekend. It was neat to swap stories with their people, to see/hear the pups' differences and similarities. I still haven't figured out why River is so much (proportionately) bigger than them!
