This lab is damn serious about understanding the ecophysiology of marine mammals 🐳🐬 🦭 and bats πŸ¦‡ πŸ§›πŸ»β€β™€οΈ- mainly through sound πŸ”‰energetics⚑️ and curiosity πŸ”βœ¨!

Hej,
πŸ”ŠπŸ‹πŸ¦‡we are the group behind Prof. Peter T. Madsen at the #Bioacoustics Lab @au.dk .

We eavesdrop 🎧🀫 on oceans 🌊 and night skies πŸŒ™ - turning sound into science to understand & protect #marinemammals 🐬🦭 and #bats πŸ¦‡ πŸ§›πŸ»β€β™€οΈ.

Join us for insights from the secret lives of #bioacousticians.

Molly the #bioacoustics #corgi joined, too!

πŸ¦‡πŸŒ™β› IT'S SPOOKY SEASON πŸŽƒπŸ’€πŸ•·

When you study #bioacoustics and #bats, there is always an appropriate Halloween outing!

This year, we went to the MΓΈnsted limestone mine, a 60-km-long man-made cave system and THE place to be for winter hibernation (9000 bats surely can't be wrong!).

πŸ¦‡CARNIVOROUS BAT RIVALS BIG CATS 🦁 IN HUNTING ABILITY

Researchers from our lab incl. Leonie Baier & @laurastidsholt.bsky.social discovered that the fringe-lipped bats of Panama hunt for prey near their own body size - similar to large cats!

Your πŸŽƒ weekend readπŸ¦‡β˜•πŸ›‹οΈ: The fascinating story behind the latest work from @laurastidsholt.bsky.social , @elena-tena.bsky.social & colleagues @ebdonana.bsky.social covered by @nytimes.com !
Bats Catch Migratory Birds and Eat Them in Midair

Paper & incredible science alert: Our assistant professor @laurastidsholt.bsky.social & a passionate team @elena-tena.bsky.social @ebdonana.bsky.social found proof for greater nocturnal #bats πŸ¦‡ preying on migratory birds 🐦 AND devouring them in flight! #bioacoustics

Intense days for our PhD student @hejfabienne.bsky.social. In a joint effort @au.dk ,#ntnu PhD student @leayero.bsky.social & #UiB, have deployed 8 geophones + 2 soundtrap hydrophones along a #DAS enabled #fibercable in #Svalbard to compare #shipnoise measurements in an Arctic fjord πŸš’πŸ”ŠπŸ‹ #seasounds

Breaking News 🚨: Our #bioacoustics πŸ”‰πŸ¬πŸ¦‡lab seeks a permanent new colleague in a tenure-track assistant professor πŸ₯·position. Excited? Then join our vibrant group of 15 researchers, postdocs and PhD students at AU who work with #marinemammal #acoustics, #conservation #physiology and #effectsofnoise!

Where am I going?

Hahaha, good one πŸ€£πŸŽƒ They might float, too πŸ€”? But the biodegradability might be slightly too fast πŸ˜…

Successful day out in Aarhus Bay πŸ‡©πŸ‡°β›΄οΈ for our PhDs @cmarcolin.bsky.social @hejfabienne.bsky.social & MSc Matthias
⬇️deployed 8 hydrophone 🎧 stations with @innovasea.com releases and

There #bioacoustics PhD project investigates #shippingnoise and impacts on porpoises 🐬.

πŸ”Š Paper alert! 🐬🎧
Noise of high-speed vessels 🚀 impairs the #biosonar ability of #harbourporpoises 🐬 - making it more difficult for them to
🀯 sense surroundings,
🧭 navigate and
🐟 hunt prey
within several hundred meters.
πŸ₯³Huge contribution to understanding masking effects!

πŸŒŠπŸ”Š Hi Bluesky! I’m Julie, a master’s student at @bioacousticsau.bsky.social, studying underwater noise, soundscapes, and narwhal behavior in Northwest Greenland.
I’ve worked on bycatch mitigation and behavior in harbour porpoises, and humpback whale photo-ID in Greenland. πŸ³β„οΈ #bioacoustics #arctic

THIS IS HOW WE DO IT 🐬🎧- (when conducting #acousticmonitoring at #windfarms, e.g. for #Energinet in the #NorthSea)
- The equipment is deployed βš“πŸŽ™οΈ,
- then, stays out at sea for monthsπŸŒŠπŸ“†,
- then, we recover it using acoustic releases βš“βœ¨,
- and analyse it back home πŸ–₯οΈπŸ”Š.
#appliedbioacoustics

POV: Mia & Jakob successfully recovered an πŸ”Š acoustic array at a #WindFarm in the #NorthSea 🌊 - part of our #AcousticMonitoring work for #Energinet.
With the gear safely back, we can now look (& listen🎧πŸ–₯️) for #porpoise 🐬 vocalisations to learn more about how they move around the wind turbines.

Happy Monday. πŸ˜…
Some of us where out in the North Sea this weekend 🌊 #justhangingaround bioacousticians

That would be fun and useful, yes please ☺️

We are incredible thankful for the dedication, skills and joy you brought to the lab πŸ˜ƒ and you know that you will always be part of the DK squad πŸ‡©πŸ‡°πŸ”‰πŸ¬

And we are for sure listening and tagging along πŸŽ§πŸ€«πŸ˜‹
