Weekend reading: Food education standards
Food and nutrition education is hard to come by these days.  As Laura Reiley wrote in Civil Eats, The end of SNAP-Ed leaves underserved communities with even fewer resources.  The One Big Beautiful Bill Act eliminated the program in July, giving program administrators 90 days to dismantle a nationwide network of nutrition classes and outreach efforts. You would think that educating SNAP recipients about choices and cooking methods would be good for everyone, but no such luck.

I loved this book.  It was an unexpected pleasure from start to finish, and it completely changed the way I view the objects in my kitchen. Politics trump science in new US dietary guidelines Evidence takes a backseat to conflicting interests in the latest health mandates BMJ 2026;392:s143 doi:  The new dietary guidelines1 and food pyramid2 issued by the US Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture have been met with great fanfare and furore.34 Under the aegis of “make America healthy again,” their overall message is the sensible, “Eat real food.” Among the actual guidelines, three repeat longstanding advice: “Eat the right amount for you,” “Focus on whole grains,” and “Eat vegetables and fruits throughout the day.” The guidelines reiterate longstanding recommendations to limit sugars and saturated fat to 10% of calories, and sodium to 2300 mg/day.
