Here is USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins doing a version of the dairy industry's milk mustache campaign celebrating the reintroduction of whole milk into schools.

Last week I was heartbroken to receive a message from Danielle Ofri, the editor of the Bellevue Literary Review, announcing the death of Jerome Lowenstein, who had been my primary care doctor for more than 20 years. To say that the editors of Bellevue Literary Review were saddened to learn of the passing of Jerome Lowenstein, MD, is an understatement.

If you are wondering what's going on at the FDA, and why everyone seems to be worried about its current leadership, take a look at this instructive post on X: "Nearly 90% of senior leaders who were at the FDA a year ago are no longer there." Comment: The FDA has lost its institutional memory.  From the standpoint of RFK Jr, that is the point.

USDA’s Regenerative Farming Initiative: Real or Greenwashing?
Regenerative is the new buzzword for sustainable agricultural practices.  Unfortunately, the term is undefined. I like the approach of the Real Organic Project: regenerative begins with---and extends---certified organic production methods. The USDA has now adopted the term for its own purposes: USDA Launches New Regenerative Pilot Program to Lower Farmer Production Costs and Advance MAHA Agenda.  It announced a $700 million Regenerative Pilot Program to help American farmers adopt practices that improve soil health, enhance water quality, and boost long-term productivity, all while strengthening America’s food and fiber supply...(HHS) is also investing in research on the connection between regenerative agriculture and public health, as well as developing public health messaging explaining this connection.

I'm always fascinated by egg-and-health studies because advice about eggs really has never changed: one egg a day was OK decades ago, and still is. But the egg industry wants you to eat more eggs.  And encourages research to promote doing so. Hence this study. Weekend browsing: FAO’s Statistical Yearbook
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released its Statistical Yearbook 2025. From the press release: This edition of the Yearbook showcases a new indicator, the prevalence of minimum dietary diversity, which will support monitoring progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2): ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition. This indicator helps to measure progress by assessing whether segments of the populations, such as children and women, are consuming a diverse range of foods, which is crucial for ensuring adequate nutrient intake.

Big Food launches campaign to counter concerns about ultra-processed foods
The Consumer Brands Association, formerly the Grocery Manufacturers of America (about as Big Ultra-Processed Food as you can get) has announced a transparency campaign ostensibly to promote the safety, affordability, and convenience of food products. I learned about this from an e-mailed anouncement. National Consumer Transparency Week...is the cornerstone of the Consumer Brands Association's ongoing effort to support the CPG industry's efforts to provide consumers thorough information while also emphasizing the safety, affordability and convenience of their products.

San Francisco's city attorney has sued major food companies for marketing ultra-processed foods (UPF) that make people sick. The lawsuit: COMPLAINT FOR: VIOLATION OF CALIFORNIA UNFAIR COMPETITION LAW AND PUBLIC NUISANCE The arguments I. UPF are dangerous: "No reason exists to believe that humans can fully adapt to these products." II.  UPF-like tobacco and illegal drugs--are addictive. UPF cause compulsive use in the same ways as other addictive substances…
