Yeah, I know they aren't a friend, lol.

> Compare vs. the legitimate work being done by universities
I can't archive articles I like with them

> the Internet Archive
That's the best one there is after archive.is

> Webrecorder
Very expensive.

The point is they aren't your friend and they aren't an archive. It's just a guy who stores websites on his servers and is happy to promote harassment campaigns if it gets him clicks. Compare vs. the legitimate work being done by universities, the Internet Archive, groups like Webrecorder, etc.

Hurray! Huge thanks to @ilya.webrecorder.net for showing me how I can replace my broken static archival version of the original Drupal site with a Webrecorder recording

I think the intent is a bit different. webrecorder doesn't record user interactions, just responses, so you get an archived copy of a website even if it uses JS to fetch content. whereas rrweb seems more of a scenario reproduction thingy

They also recommended Webrecorder, an open source tool that can be installed on a server. You can get a free 7-day trial, but I haven't had time to test it yet, but it looks handy and powerful for copying/archiving large websites: https://webrecorder.net/browsertrix/#get-started

Webrecorder.net lets you preserve complex/dynamic/interactive websites. A bunch of us made a free zine on how to use it to take action saving what *you* love on the web: zinebakery.com/homemade-zin... (Note Webrecorder has both free OS browser plugin+dev tools, & paid org-scale option.)

Introducing GovArchive.us & mirroring entire sites with web archives
Read the full post at Webrecorder. We’re excited to announce the launch of GovArchive.us, a dedicated site for exploring our US Government Web Archive on Browsertrix. The project also introduces a brand new approach for viewing web archives: the ability to host a full-site “mirror” from any web archive, keeping original links intact while hosting them on a new domain.

Archiving tips for marginalized communities:
1. Backup everything (PDFs, screenshots, drives)
2. Use multiple platforms (decentralized, P2P)
3. Automate archiving (Wayback, Webrecorder)
4. Protect privacy (scrub metadata)
5. Organize & add context.
6. Work collectively
7. Print for offline access

I've tried using wget --mirror in the past but it never really worked the way I wanted. Excited to try this next time I want to archive a website.

Whether it's a DH project, a personal site, or even gov site that is going offline, all you need is a WACZ file created with any of our tools (Browsertrix.com, ArchiveWeb.page) and you can host a web archive-powered mirror of your own, for free!
