Another mid-plumage transition! This time we have a #WhiteCrownedSparrow going from its brown juvenile crown to its vibrant white! Shortly after this photo, the WCSP in my area decamped up north to begin their own breeding season.

WCSP (among other #birds) are famous among researchers for their ability to stay half-awake for up to 2 weeks during their long migration. Somehow, they can rest one half of their brain at a time, while keeping alert with the other half. They’ll fly with one eye closed, then catch up on full sleep

Dear god. I remember listening to WCSP, CSpan radio, in DC and they would rebroadcast all of the Sunday talking head shows. One Sunday, this clip was put in as part of the Johnson tapes. Johnson? Indeed.
How I managed to live my life and not see this absolutely epic piece of internet culture that illustrates audio of LBJ ordering pants is beyond me. There are still tears in my eyes from this.
