#tech+humanities
My theory is that tech bros hate humanities because they've all tried once to impress a girl studding English Lit by talking about a book and they were all laughed at for their complete misreading of the text.

not to mention tech people can still be bad or questionable in their own fields, just like with some in the humanities

FWIW, the best tech people I know are ones who genuinely are interested in the humanities and also grasp that there are those who know more than they do (this also applies to people in general).

Bingo! Relying on tech to be our social conscience when they have never taken a humanities, history or political science course, and lack social skills and awareness then give them $$$ and proximity to power and you have doge, zuckerberg, musk, theil, etc, innovation without social consciousness.

From today's Chronicle of Higher Ed briefing. I am *never* an advocate of cutting programs. But I am curious to see if there will be the same type of "students aren't majoring in this, so let's cut the program" discourse around computer science as there always is for the arts and humanities.

Why did tech bros all skip Humanities classes & willingly become as non-empathetic and incurious as a sockpuppet troll account, yet think there wouldn't be consequences (like not knowing who Johnny Cash is, or what a "joke" is)

I don’t know about you but I sincerely believe that Zohran Mamdani’s BA Major in Africana Studies enabled him to understand our current conjuncture & its demands of justice. Humanities shape minds & in his case for the better.
I know white tech bros disagree as they continue to collapse our worlds.

JCO's comments are about Elon Musk, but could easily also be about Trump. I also take JCO's comment as an indirect condemnation of tech vs. humanities in education--a fight I'm still convinced that humanities is losing, much to the detriment of all of us.
My theory about Joyce Carol Oates is that all her bad posts are her charging up like Godzilla's spines until she lets loose with a radioactive blast that leaves the world's richest Nazi a pile of ash

The kind of STEM MAGA support isn't the kind of STEM most STEM people do.

I would have to say the hostility between tech and humanities almost always boils down to tech vs business people (which we view as mostly humanities people due to most of those conflict being between technology and

Thanks to @taylor-arnold.bsky.social for working with us to publish proceedings from the 2025 Digital Humanities Tech Symposium in the new ACH anthology.

i was exposed to the political takes of engineering majors and im once again saying everyone in tech and engineering needs to be under the conservatorship of a humanities major until they can prove they are sentient

I'm not a tech - I pretty much fail at things not related to the humanities - but my view is if you're not using AI for novel disease treatment research and the like, burn it all down

I want to get my fellow humanities teachers to do a “gym workout” where we rely on new technology but really the tech is just doing the workout while we scroll TikTok

I do think it might be important to note that the modern tech industry and anti-intellectualism are really not opposed a lot of the time. Just look at how tech bros talk about the humanities or the targeting of academic funding in general when they got some power.

Lotsa bangers in this thread.

And a reminder that: unregulated capitalism and associated power is the problem, not the tech.
Also, tech bros and their tech bro critics don't know and are incurious about how society works. Need better grounding in history and humanities.
Next up on my reading list.

…I am already regretting this choice.

Very proud to have worked on this statement of the Modern Language Association with @annamillsoer.bsky.social and other colleagues on the MLA’s task force on AI in Research and Teaching. It is a direct call for faculty input into Ed Tech decision-making, especially AI: www.mla.org/Resources/Ad... 🧵

Desperately need to send every tech bro to a Gulag where they all get taught humanities and liberal arts before they destroy the world.
"Torment Nexus" comes from this tweet and is often used now to describe the kind of negative experiences you can have with social networks, like getting dogpiled or harassed or being pushed into conflict

as the years pile up I see more and more evidence to support my hypothesis that tech people all fucked off in their humanities classes and as a result the only thing they get from all the sci-fi they consume is "wow wouldn't that be cool"

Remember the modern "tech" elite largely ARE trained in the Humanities, at least nominally. Both Peter Thiel and Alex Karp were Philosophy majors. They are investors: what they have "created" is companies, not technologies.

It's the incuriosity that's the problem. Plus the sociopathy.

when Peter Thiel pays people to skip college it’s all about getting tech people to NOT learn anything about the humanities.

Thiel wants tech workers to have his own middle-school level stunted understanding of things like Tolkien. And when they skip college they are not exposed to different ideas.
AI chip startup backed by Antichrist aficionado Peter Thiel and In-Q-Tel (CIA venture capital) raises $100 million.

Experts are skeptical it will pan out. But don’t worry: The founder is not an expert and skipped college for a Thiel Fellowship.
