Lavorare nell'IT è diventato faticoso....

Prior employer: Budget cuts! We're firing all syseng, network, DBA & storage admins, and giving the root passwords to all devs. We're now a DevOps shop now! 🤡

Current employer: Budget cuts! We're firing all dev coordinators, project managers & review boards. We're an Agile shop now! 🤡

I’m good friends with a 60 year old SysEng who still maintains DB2. For a LARGE profitable company.

Systems engineering should be part of continuing Ed, not undergrad. Engineering needs a better PE system with steps. Full time school should teach theory. But to make it to PE jr - eg after 2 yrs exp, you should have some reqd syseng cont ed/ethics.

WebDev / SysEng / Design / Marketing in East Asian markets. Crazy hours, but love the work.

If you want to mess around with it, you can now install VMware's Fusion Workstation for free (used to be $$$) and run Linux (etc.) quite smoothly as a VM on the Apple silicon machines. Though retired(ish) I keep my hand in the sysEng world doing this on my laptop and studio.

This is all so painfully familiar from my experience. It's very common for software devs and syseng to approach data problems this way. Their work is typically focused on optimizing for throughput, not data integrity or reliability.

The layoff hits just keep coming. I've just learned I'm losing another of my syseng guys, three from the network operations team, and a promised backfill for one position is cancelled. A year ago, we were a group of 20+; now we're seven, with still more layoffs possible.
Another of my group was laid off I learned today. While he is on vacation.

Our CEO hosted an all-hands. Much of it we expected: it was necessary, right-sizing, etc.. I was surprised however by his declaration there would be no published list of changes: we need to determine who survived on our own.
I've also just learned a project manager and my VP have also been laid off. Unsure yet how many in other divisions have been RIF'd.

I suspect my days are numbered, probably to March 31, 2025, upon the completion of certain projects. We'll see if I'm right.

The majority of roles have been on the east side, but I can't sustainably be working in office every day with a 5+ hour commute. Factor that in the weird liminal space my career experience puts me in— not tier 1/2 support, but not quite syseng— and I think I'm going to have to settle big time here.

As an IT syseng/admin, I hate certs.

I hate certs so much. I gotta spend like $3000 on seven certs to even be considered for jobs nowadays.

Network+ is $370.
Security+ is $404
A+ is $253
RHEL is $500
And then all the other extraneous ones.

Hate this shit.

Also self hosting? Depends on the location, security, etc...

As an IT SysEng I seriously DO NOT want to do my day job along with my publishing job.

10 messy days. I’ve got to present to division on something I haven’t had a chance to work on in 2 weeks at 9 am tomorrow, Friday to SysEng & mission office on project newly in charge of. And check revisions on doc I provided numbers on. My brain is spinning & body revolting.

system3-sdl2は派生元 (System3 for Win32) や派生先 (SysEng) とあまり乖離しないようにしていたけど、それでは厳しくなってきたので気にせずゴリゴリ書き換えていくことにした

This reminds me of something I read in a SysEng book by a guy who was at Netflix. They saw a huge drop in usage and were scrambling to figure out what broke. Eventually someone figured out it was because the Super Bowl was happening, so nobody was watching Netflix.

This is what it looks like when you all watch the boxing match together and take a little break from posting and liking things until the time between rounds where everyone checks in with their friends.

Then after the match y'all go back to posting and liking things as usual.

Pretty damn neat.

Crawling to the idea of employment. That's 6 months of relaxing my body, in fits and spurts. Still so much ground to cover on personal effects. Req, const, and att on work? non-negotiable. Read the room. #cptsd #disability #recovery #audhd #burnout #systems #engineering #syseng #seekingwork #stem

Two of my domains have had invalid TLS certs on them for two months or so because this guy, syseng extraordinaire, king of bullshit security shit, forgot to set up a cronjob. Classic.
