#SundayLit Prompt: Openings - the opening of my novel, Cold Fury.

When Nick Devlin came-to on the cold, slimy cobblestones of that dark alley, his first thought was—I’m gonna shoot Sebastian Einhardt in his fucking face, then fuck the bullet hole.

#sundaylit prompt: Openings

This is probably an apt opportunity to muse over the opening for my upcoming book...

I originally started with a single big block of text; it is meant to be slightly overwhelming because my character is slightly overwhelmed […]

#sundaylit 10/11 prompt is: Colour

The meaning of Blue.

For most horror and horror-adjective fiction, red is the color of fear. Demon eyes blaze red, fire crackles.

However, in "Otherside Picnic," blue represents otherworldliness, and that seeped into my work. Ghost and phantom flames give […]

#sundaylit Q2: The Mentor archetype is often depicted in popular fiction as an old white man.

An interesting observation. I write in a Japanese millue, so this isn't quite what happens. It's an old, wise Japanese man.

How easy it is to slip into genderized stereotypes. I will have to think […]

#sundaylit prompt: Colour
(tangentially related to recent #pennedpossibilities prompt too)

Four disparate lines from the WIP:

"Polly was the first and only ghost he knew who was actually drifting about clad in gossamer white."

"Leo was not precisely afraid of ghosts, not even after what had […]

#sundaylit Q1 Dream trope

View: I hate it. Especially if it is pulled out on the end to hand wave things away.

Done well: Alice in Wonderland.

Dream trope is not the same as a meanful use of dreams.

#SundayLit is a new weekly writing prompt open to all. Share a WIP snippet, short story, poem, or whatever the theme inspires.

I’ll also post discussion Qs throughout the Sunday.

My aim is to make a space for writing and community, so please read, engage and enjoy.

Need ideas? Here are some suggestions.
- Share the opening line to you WIP
- Share a line using the prompt word
- Get creative with alternative meanings: an opening could mean an opportunity, an open space, or the beginning of something.

#sundaylit A3: Has a dream you’ve had ever sparked a story or poem?

Some of the more biazzar bit of my dreams show up in stories. No full stories are inspired by dreams. The illustration below is from a dream and is part of For Love of a Konbini Idol

The Mentor:

“The shock collar. It’s just for show.”
“Ow!”
“Mostly.”
“It hurts!”
“What have you learnt?”
“That you’re a bast- owwwwwwwww!”
“Try again.”
“That’s you’re a vindictive bastard!”
“And?”
“Owwwww.”
“AND?”
“Trust nobody.”
“Very good. In the next lesson, we’ll harness the plug […]

#sundaylit A3: Which colours regularly crop up in your storytelling? Why is that? 2/2

Here is a sample. Full range color use.

**Snip Konbini Idol**

All around was a clear **blue** sky, and far below were **green** prairies cut by **tan** roads. Houses clustered like prayer beads along them […]

#sundaylit A2: Do you use colour based on its symbolic weight? How do you avoid using clichés when using colour symbolically? e.g. green for envy, red for anger.

I use color incidentally. Meaning some colors show up under certain conditions. It is seldom meant a symbolize. Nor is it cliché […]

#sundaylit prompt: Dreams

No dreams in this particular WIP, and anything that might count as dream-like is a bit late in the storyline and confusing out of context, so here's a mention of the word itself, in a passage where the MC ("the Sweetwater boy") is […]

#sundaylit prompt: Geography

My geography is usually made up. I have a general idea of the world (or at least the continent), but I mostly set my book in one place, or with very limited travel.

I could sketched the layout of the stronghold for Fairhaven, and the street for Domesticated Magic […]

# Market Open

#wss366 #mastoprompt #sundaylit

The #market had just #opened, and Tina #trembled. This was her first show, a small affair in a neighboring village. There were a few farmers, the blacksmith, a phone service vendor, one juggler, and a local musician.

Still, she was terrified. What […]

Colour:

It shimmered, it’s form a wavering mass of colour as though it was enclosed within a soap bubble. Within was a clockwork contraption, looking far too much like a ten-legged spider.

I did not like the look of it, especially the thick legs, the resembled the slightly curved […]

Happiness:

I triggered the latch, and carefully pushed against the gnarled, wooden surface. The ancient hinges creaked ominously as the door slowly opened.

I beamed as I gazed about the massive hall beyond. My smile must have been as bright as the room’s gleaming contents, so […]

#sundaylit A3: Which colours regularly crop up in your storytelling? Why is that?

Blue -> supernatural & hair color
Black -> style
Red-> Hair color
White/Silver/Gray -> fog, clouds
Green -> Growing things

I describe things, and color is part of that. It is part of a baroque writing style.

#sundaylit Q4: Dreams can equally mean goals. Do you, as an author, let your protagonists achieve all their dreams?

I like "happy" endings. So love is fulfilled. Some of the characters' secondary dreams are fulfilled. Usually in the form of found family and finding a purpose for their life […]

Q6. If you removed the physical description from your prose, would the reader still get a sense of who the character was?
