Finally: it's notable that anti-wind conspiracy theorists in #NewEngland propose SMRs & other nukes as an alternative to #offshorewind - despite their dismal economics, despite how long it takes to build them.

It's clear that they are not listening to the Navajo, not considering lifecycle effects.9

True renewables solar, wind, wave, geothermal - 100%
Using fossil fuels to bridge to renewables (it will bridge to nothing but increase ff use. SMRs not a solution. Using CSS to suck CO2 from the atmosphere won't work & is stupid.

New analysis by AES Indiana shows that new nuclear SMRs are wildly uneconomic and would significantly raise utility bills for Hoosiers, even assuming big price declines by 2035 and lavish subsidies by federal and state government.

Our politicians, all of them, are beholden to fossil fuel interests. No one builds SMRs or hydro dams in a climate emergency unless they're trying to slow the energy transition down while spending the most money possible.

Ford is spending over $6 B a year to hide the increase from the public, enough to buy a heat pump p for every house in Ontario within 10 years.

Doubling down on nuclear to pay an American company for SMRs that only run on American fuel is Elbows down.

We know how to make nukes. We need to solve the funding and cost model.

All this innovation ion SMRs and whatnot is because we arent willing to coordinate to solve the revenue and funding

SMRs have been around for 50 years. There are scalability problems, tech issues. Many SMR designs generate more radiation waste (by 2 - 30 more) than conventional reactors. Where are we going to out the nuclear waste?

All of these things (and more) should be decided by the public, not #KingCarney.

Ontario's existing, proven nuclear technology costs over 2.5 times as much per Kwh as their hydro generation.

If you think SMRs are going to come in cheaper than that, you're living in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

But our province (SK) sees the unproven technology of SMRs as the panacea for baseload.*

* Or the smokescreen that "allows" us to burn coal until (a possibly literal) Doomsday.

Ontario power rates to rise on higher nuclear generation costs, conservation spending

That tracks. But I can't imagine a continuing naval reactor program wouldn't have efficiencies for civilian SMRs. Having a pool of engineers, machinists, tradies etc who've done.

Agree re 3, technically easier. But nuke uniquely lets you duck duplicative prov/terr regulatory process

Bill Gates finally realized that his small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) - the slowest, most expensive entry into the climate addressing sweepstakes - will not be taken seriously if people realize how critical the problem is right now.

He can’t get subsidies for tech that will be MUCH too late!
Bill Gates sure picked an interesting day to downplay the threat of climate change

And another factor is oligarchs.

Thiel is crazy. I would NEVER trust him.
