WRI advocates for a “Safe System” approach that shifts responsibility for #RoadSafety from road users to city officials and planners.

Adoption of the #SafeSystem is critical to achieving the United Nations goal of halving road traffic deaths and injuries and furthering #SDGs. #RoadSafetyWeek

The people involved in this task force overwhelming address Safer People in a #SafeSystem Approach to traffic safety

One person from the DOT (responsible for about 1/4 of roads in the state, but where 60-70% of traffic deaths occur) is unlikely to be enough to address the Safer Roads issue

Drivers can be distracted by many things. The distraction I most often see is drivers looking at their cell phone, or eating, or putting on makeup, or talking to the person sitting next to/behind them. Lots of things distract drivers. Distraction doesn't need to result in death/injury. #SafeSystem

Discussion has pulled back a bit to contrast CMFs (highly quantified research-based design guidance) and upstream solutions (whether public health, transit, land use, or the #SafeSystem pyramid)

Is getting a traffic engineer to walk places better than a good pedestrian CMF?
