This location had been around for about 55 years; its building was constructed in 1970. Located at 4749 University Way NE, the closure was a part of the company's nationwide "JACK on Track" initiative, which is shuttering 150-200 "underperforming" locations in 2025 and 2026. The #University District Jack in the Box had 12 employees who reportedly lost their jobs. In addition to the U District fast food restaurant, the 16400 West Valley location in Tukwila was also permanently closed. However one feels about fast food chains, this longstanding #JackintheBox was a part of many Seattleites upbringings -including hitting up the drive-thru on the late late night, which was open 24 hours (and its dining room was open until 10pm). It was part of a fairly sketch section of the Ave, and its parking lot was a known dope spot (and the site of multiple stabbings over the years) - plus it was situated right behind the old "UnSafeway." According to local legend, the Ave Jack in the Box may have been one of the last places Kurt Cobain was seen alive. It has now gone the way of other fallen Jack in the Cracks, i.e. the equally infamous Broadway location (closed in 2008) - which according to a Rolling Stone article, was where Cobain would wait for hours for his dealer. Remaining Jack in the Boxes in Seattle include 85th & Aurora, 125th & Aurora, SODO, Georgetown, and the Admiral District in West Seattle. University of Texas admins are confronting the collapse of academic freedom by creating a working group of people hand-picked by the administration to, at some point, craft a statement about "academic integrity".
Dear UT Faculty and Staff, I am pleased to announce a new initiative, inspired by conversations with faculty, that reaffirms our commitment to the enduring values of academic freedom and responsibility, and our shared calling to present our students with intellectually honest discussions of broad and varied perspectives in the classroom. Today, we are establishing a Faculty Working Group on Academic Integrity at The University of Texas at Austin. The group’s charge is to develop a statement on academic integrity that affirms both the importance of academic freedom and its responsible exercise in teaching at UT. We all recognize that higher education in general is under scrutiny. Some question whether our University has strayed from our duty to steward curiosity, open inquiry, and productive debate, while others worry that we have narrowed or even excluded opportunities for dialogue or dissent. This is not the Texas way. We must define our character, or it will be defined by others. And how we live out that character in our classrooms will reveal our commitment. As the flagship university of our state and one of the world’s greatest universities, UT holds a critical position of public trust. That trust can be earned and sustained through a renewed commitment to academic integrity. To guide this effort, I have invited a select group of faculty leaders, representing a broad range of academic units, to serve on the Working Group: The Working Group will be chaired by Provost William Inboden. I want to express my gratitude to the members of this Working Group for offering their time and expertise to this important initiative. 4 What's the actual energy usage of ChatGPT? Some claims circulating online suggest that a single ChatGPT query consumes up to 3 watt-hours of electricity. But those figures are often based on speculation and outdated assumptions. In contrast, independent analysis by Epoch Al found that typical ChatGPT queries using GPT-4o likely consume ~0.3 watt-hours— 10x less than earlier estimates. That's roughly equivalent to running a laptop or LED lightbulb for a few minutes. "Even for a heavy chat user, the energy cost of ChatGPT will be a small fraction of the overall electricity consumption of a developed-country resident." — Epoch Al • What do the researchers say? The University of Michigan's ML Energy_ Initiative has been at the forefront of measuring actual Al energy usage. Their team developed a tool called Zeus Monitor to track real-time GPU power consumption and built the ML.Energy Leaderboard to benchmark various models. Their findings? Many open-source LLMs use far less energy per query than is often reported. While proprietary models like GPT-4 are not yet benchmarked on the leaderboard, the data points toward an improving trend in energy efficiency across the board. ¿ What's driving these gains? Al efficiency has improved dramatically over the past decade: • GPU innovations (like Nvidia's Hopper architecture) have made chips 10-15x more efficient than a few years ago. • Software optimization has multiplied chip performance without requiring new hardware. • Techniques like quantization and pruning are helping shrink models while maintaining quality. • Tools like Perseus are being developed to orchestrate training across thousands of GPUs with minimal wasted energy— cutting total power usage by up to 30%.

The EU is funding an initiative if european universities and companies (but also including AMD?) to create a "truely open" large language model.

And in true EU fashion, it's all just words and nothing else. Many of these words also make no sense.

models in an unprecedented collaboration to advance European AI capabilities, the OpenEuroLLM project. A consortium of 20 leading European research institutions, companies and EuroHPC centres coordinated by Jan Hajič (Charles University, Czechia) and co-led by Peter Sarlin (AMD Silo AI, Finland) will build a family of performant, multilingual, large language foundation models for commercial, industrial and public services. The transparent and compliant open-source models will democratize access to high-quality AI technologies and strengthen the ability of European companies to compete on a global market and public organizations to produce impactful public services. The OpenEuroLLM project is aligned with the imperative to improve Europe’s competitiveness and digital sovereignty. The project is a prime example of the type of technology infrastructure needed to lower thresholds for European AI product development and refinement, demonstrating the strength of transparency, openness and community involvement, values largely recognized across the European tech ecosystem. The models will be developed within Europe's robust regulatory framework, ensuring alignment with European values while maintaining technological excellence. Cooperating with open-source and open science communities like LAION, open-sci and OpenML, and additional experts in the field assembled in the project’s Open Strategic Partnership Board, OpenEuroLLM will ensure that the models, software, data and evaluation will be fully open and can be fine-tuned and instruction-tuned for specific industry and public sector needs. These performant multilingual models preserve both linguistic and cultural diversity, enabling European companies to develop high-quality products and services in the era of AI.
