MCDOT allows adjacent homeowners to veto sidewalk projects.

Make sure MCDOT hears support for sidewalks!
Parents drive their kids to school. I don’t want to shovel snow. There is already a sidewalk on the other side of the street. Hardly anybody walks. You can walk in the grass or the road and it’s fine. People will walk in front of people’s homes and driveways. I don’t want a sidewalk on my property. Nobody told me about this hearing. Crosswalk signs are ugly. Parents will park in the crosswalk. Sidewalks are ugly. There are very few children living on my street. Nobody has been killed. We already pay the HOA for walking paths. My property value will go down. I have lived here for 35 years without a sidewalk. The community does not want this. Don’t take our front yard. It’s already hard to park on the street. Sidewalks are bad for curb appeal. I used to walk my kids to school without sidewalks. Kids can use the paths to walk to school. My taxes will go up. I moved here because there weren’t sidewalks. A sidewalk will ruin the ambience of my neighborhood.

During this meeting, MCDOT will present concept plans for the following proposed sidewalk and safety enhancements: Bucknell Drive – Construction of a new sidewalk between Evans Drive and Windham Lane. Glenhaven Drive – Construction of a new sidewalk between Dennis Avenue and Gridley Lane. Grandlin Road – Construction of a new sidewalk between Dennis Avenue and Gridley Lane. Plyers Mill Road – Construction of a new sidewalk between Georgia Avenue and Glenhaven Drive. Republic Road – Construction of a new sidewalk between Dunkirk Drive and Huntley Place. Windham Lane – Construction of a new sidewalk between Inwood Avenue and Sligo Creek Trail. Dennis Avenue – Installation of curb extensions to slow turning movements at several locations between Amherst Avenue and Julep Avenue. These improvements will replace the existing temporary flex posts.

Today I verified that after well over a decade of waiting for this stretch of bike path to be completed, MCDOT has decided not to complete the path. Instead, MBT users will be directed down a 5'-wide sidewalk along Burlington, across a busy intersection, and onto the sidewalk along Fenton.

We know that it's killing pedestrians and bikers because kids have been killed at Montgomery County intersections only to have MCDOT refuse to put in basic safety infrastructure.

Drivers routinely speed down Sligo Ave through East Silver Spring (where I live) despite the high volume of pedestrians, due to a lack of stops and traffic calming elements.

A child was recently hit at this intersection but MCDOT refuses to consider stop signs. This approach is killing pedestrians.

people in MoCo beg and plead with @mcdotnow.bsky.social for safety improvements only to get turned away. it shouldn’t take a tragedy to get a stop sign. as a transportation planner who’s worked all agencies over North America, I know something at MCDOT has to change.

five months after a driver hit me and my dog, MCDOT has again refused to install a stop sign at the intersection, calling it “unwarranted.” they will build a crosswalk, which should already have been there! it took a month to get this response. i am furious and, frankly, defeated

I have worked with @mcdotnow.bsky.social as a council staffer, a consultant, and now a resident. there are good people working there, but as agency they are far too quick to offer excuses. we need new leadership at MCDOT, and it’ll be the next Montgomery County executive’s job to find it.

I am heartbroken for the families and the community at Earle B. Wood Middle school. As a parent this is an unimaginable tragedy, a nightmare. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the little girl.

Sidewalks are public transportation infrastructure, for the public to use, for public benefit. Why should individual adjoining property owners get a veto?
About 10 years ago, I began leading an effort with likeminded neighbors to get sidewalks added to a number of streets in our neighborhood. It was a nightmare and, after three years, we ultimately succeeded. Embedded in the neighborhood was a county elementary school that did not use buses; all of the students walked or were dropped off by parents. Most of the streets that funneled walkers to the school lacked sidewalks, forcing the kids to walk in the street, around parked cars. It was a tragedy waiting to happen. For those three years, we worked with MCDOT and the school PTA, held public hearing and listened to the objections. As the president of the community association, being the face of the push for the sidewalks was often times depressing. The animosity of some neighbors was palpable. "But my tree! And a kid hasn't been killed yet!" was typical. Never mind that the county replaces trees and the safety of children should never come second to a half dead oak. And then there were the ancient racists who would email me "I don't want a sidewalk. I don't want illegals looking in my windows!" When I'd reply saying I would submit their email to be included in the public hearing record, they shut up right quick. In the end, we won our sidewalks. A year later, nearly 3 miles of new sidewalks had been installed and the overwhelming opinion of the neighborhood was that this was a good thing. Not only did it vastly improve safety for the school children, the neighborhood was imminently more walkable and easily connected to downtown Wheaton.
