These decorated bone slips were found during excavations at Cairn H, one of the Neolithic passage tombs at Loughcrew.

They date to the 1st century AD, and they were found along with other material from the Iron Age, showing that the Neolithic tomb continued as a place of importance for millennia

I am particularly fond of the small antlered stag, I have darkened its outline to make it a little easier to see and included the original image for comparison.

You can see them in the Treasury Exhibition in the National Museum of Ireland.

Inscribed slates uncovered at Kilwinning Abbey in Ayrshire may offer clues about those who lived and worked there over 500 years ago ✍️

Ok, molybdenum has some applications as catalyst/electrodes/in alloys but copper is the conductor par excellence.

In art we have all of bronze & copper sculpture & many blue/green pigments! Vote copper!

In the fourteenth century, at the beginning of the Hundred Years’ War, they offered their lives to the English king in exchange for the lifting of his siege of the city. The necks of some of the figurines have faint grooves, probably made by the rubbing of a cord, others have suspension holes, suggesting they were worn as pendants or amulets. Some have incised patterns which it’s suggested are protective symbols. Read more:

Amber can generate static electricity⚡️ For their ancient owners, these small animals could give off sparks in the dark and make hair stand on end, as if by magic✨

Top left: profile photo of the head, neck, and part of the front torso of an animal (bear?) facing left. Carved from deep orange amber. Found at Bølling Sø (lake) Central Jutland, Denmark. Top right: small almost complete figurine of an amber bear seen in profile facing right. The lower legs are incomplete. The ears, muzzle and mouth are defined. Carved from translucent orange amber. Washed up on a beach at Fanø, Denmark. Bottom left: small figurine in the shape of a bear(?) carved from dark orange amber. It is known asvthe Resen Bear. There is fine incised geometric ornamentation on the body. Found in a bog at Resen, Denmark. Bottom left: bright orange amber animal head shown in profile facing left. Found in 1952 at Egemarke in Denmark, it is known as the Egemarke Elk. It is decorated with incised bands of closely aligned parallel zig-zag lines. There are two circular perforations at the bottom of the neck. All on display at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.

Another of Alnwick's attractions is Barter Books. The bookshop is in the old railway station. Designed by William Bell and opened in 1887 closed 1968. Barter Books was opened in 1991. Many original features have been retained, including this water fountain.

A drinking fountain built onto a recess in a stone wall. It features a stone basin and there is a metal tap and two drinking cups retained by chains. Incised into the tile work back of the recess at the words: FILTERED WATER Bookshelves are placed to either side of the fixture which is in a secondhand bookshop.

The lower slopes of the northern Ganges Chasma rim. A thick pile of sediment eroded from the steep canyon rim has accumulated along the canyon walls, forming a relatively flat surface that gently slopes towards the center of the canyon. Water flowing out of the narrow rim canyons incised into this plain, forming shallow, terraced valleys. This water may have originated as meltwater during the retreat of glaciers that formerly occupied many of the canyon wall valleys. This image combines two 40 m/px natural color CRISM hyperspectral images (600 nm, 530 nm, and 440 nm as RGB channels, respectively) with a 5 m/px monochrome CTX image. Rugged terrain on the southeastern rim of Bond Crater imaged by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Erosion in the rim has incised into the underlying rocks, exposing knobs of erosionally-resistant material, which are likely crystalline rocks which underlie the surface at depth.The Bond crater impact occurred in some of the oldest terrain on the Martian surface, which shows extensive evidence of reworking by water. In the near infrared, the color of these rocks suggests that they contain clay minerals, which formed through the interaction of these rocks with water. The surface here has been shaped by water in more recent history as well. The small channels here are likely runoff channels from the last Martian ice age. Although located in the southern mid-latitudes, this location was probably exposed to a glacial or tundra-like environment. This false-color image uses a surface spectrum ranging from 380 nm to 2600 nm, which has been squeezed down to resemble what humans would see if all color variations occurred within the range of human vision (380-780 nm). This image was created using the CRISM imaging spectrometer. Each pixel of a CRISM image contains a 500 point spectrum, from which a color can be reconstructed. This reconstructed color was overlaid on a higher-resolution image taken with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Context Camera (CTX), which simultaneously took a photo while CRISM was collecting data.
