If we are being pedantic, which we tend to be in most Geometry classes, should we say one pile of 7 apples is congruent to a second pile of 7 apples, and not that the two piles are equal? ♾️

what would be a good problem to pose?

powers 1 to 5 once each:
(2⁵ + 0⁴ + 2³ + 5¹)²

straightforward representation:
(20 + 25)²

nonsense representation:
2+0+2+5 by 2+0+2+5 times table
sum the entries

You draw one marble and record its color. Then you put the marble back in the bag. Repeat forever.

What is the probability that, at some point, the number of blue 🔵 marbles drawn exceeds the number of red 🔴 marbles drawn?

Hint: it's ≥¼ based on just the first move!

#iTeachMath ♾️ #iTeachMarbles 🟣
You have four marbles in a bag.
Three of them are identical red marbles and the other is a blue marble.

How many ways are there to reach into the bag and grab three marbles—two red and one blue?

Had an interesting debate today in class.

The linked piece can be found in the Dec 2024 issue (the AMS Current Issue is already Jan 2025) so I've also put the text in screenshots below.

I wish more people could take a class with the author! I took Mathematical Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics with DJV. Really great stuff.

the question we investigated (with several starting numbers, not just 6 but all the positive evens up through 20) is:

if you repeatedly carry out this mapping, do you always get back to the original order? if so, how many iterations does it take?

for the case of 6 we got 4 iterations #iTeachMath ♾️

—a different class, Problem Solving and Posing, as we gear up to explore the 2019 PCMI materials.

Closed with:
How many ways can you 2-color *faces* of a cube? Distinct up to orientation.

Follow-up:
What about *vertices* of a cube? (PCMI materials ask about *edges*... no thanks lol)

I’m sorry Duolingo, I have a different language to learn this Summer.

I had planned on teaching Python - alas my client refused.

Guess it was inevitable. As a pirate and tutor of calculus - neither forgets the C!

Even in playing the trumpet, one must play C#.

This problem always challenges students because they have trouble turning the triangles in their mind — see how they found two different scale factors? This year I finally realized I could turn this into manipulatives that they could actually turn and it was game-changing! #mtbos #iteachmath ♾️
