I'm mostly a UI-first dev—only touch the console when absolutely necessary. But for installing and updating apps on #Windows11, I've fully switched to #winget. CLI wins here: faster, cleaner, and way more convenient than manual installs.

I think the hardest part of teaching artists and designers to use git is getting them over the massive amount of fearmongering over git's "complexity" in game dev circles.

Like it's not any more complicated than using perforce or plastic, the industry staples.

wanna see my NixOS configuration for a git-pages cluster that announces BGP routes for anycast? it runs on any commodity VPS because i sub-lease a single anycast /32 IPv4 from rage4 instead of an entire /24 prefix

here's the entire thing: codeberg.org/grebedoc-dev...
rage4.infra.grebedoc.dev

Well, first dev update: I got a project notes page set up for myself, fired up Godot and refamiliarized myself with some code I've written for it in the past, and was in the middle of setting up a Git repository... when my power started flickering, so I has to shut everything down.

If you have to pick only one other tool outside your text editor for dev work, choose git

SWE agent that’s just a guy in your computer checking off TODOs: nice, familiar
100 shared-history agents that fission and fusion to coevolve with your git branches and treat access to your dev server as a currency to barter with each other: weird, off-putting

"But silksong mods aren't playing the way the dev intended"

BITCH DO YOU NOT PUT KETCHUP/MAYO/WHATEVER ON FRIES BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE WAY THE FRY COOK INTENDED THEM TO BE EATEN

The dev intended you to give them money. You did. Transaction over. USE MODS.

Unless you're on console then git guud?

It's really very simple, Sara. You see, git is a distributed version control system that Linus Torvalds initially developed for the Linux kernel because the dev of Bitkeeper, the proprietary VCS he was using previously, revoked the free license...

We have started to use flox.dev. We also check in environments into git. So it's easy to get all up and running quite easy. We even start local dev databases using flox. Loving it so far.
Flox | Your dev environment, everywhere
Manage and share development environments with all the frameworks and libraries you need, then publish artifacts anywhere. Harness the power of Nix.

this question made me realize that I have no idea why View() is capitalized, and no one else on the internet seems to either

Looking at git logs... it might be a proper noun? I wrote a blog about it:

Why is does the `View()` function in R start with a capital V? I have no idea why. Does this have to do with functions that are not just dealing with some sort of standard output? #rstats

from dev world, I think CVS/git or subversion/git is a better analogy. git is more content-oriented, with repos less tied to a specific service/host, though there is still a strong conception of origins/hosts/services

Why you host your own projects at home and have the basic print statements of connections. This is just entertaining.

We’re still deploying crypto with 17th-century flaws in 2025, and nobody revoked the dev team’s Git access. And if you’re still printing documents unironically, you deserve to be decrypted by a dead mathematician.
