#fossilfuelsubsidies
Arresting the wrong people.

When the real climate criminals go completely unpunished?!

#FossilFuels release toxic gases into the atmosphere at every stage of their production & use.

Those pollutants persist in the biosphere for decades to centuries.

Time is short. The need is great.

The Agreement on Climate Change, Trade, & Sustainability (#ACCTS) is the first legally binding deal to prohibit #FossilFuelSubsidies👏.

Unfortunately, the agreement’s numerous loopholes put progress at risk ➿. Here is more by @iisd.bsky.social : www.iisd.org/articles/dee...

Thank you for using a realistic number for #fossilfuelsubsidies. A bill to end exactly this amount was introduced in the previous Congress. Unfortunately, it went nowhere, and I fear it will suffer the same fate in this Congress. We should continue to demand these types of reforms nonetheless.

I'm pleased to report that the peer reviews of the G20's efforts to phase out their #fossilfuelsubsidies are finally publicly available again.

They were on the OECD's web site, but disappeared. They are now on a dedicated page of the revamped web site for the @quakerunoffice.bsky.social (QUNO).

In 2023–24, Australian governments gave $14.5B in fossil fuel subsidies, a 31% rise from $11.1B in 2022–23.

If subsidies grow at 31% annually, they would reach $215.8B by 2034.

The total over the next decade would be $850.7B based on this growth ratio.

We’re one of the richest countries in the world. We can afford anything we want but not everything we want. We can ‘afford’ $350 billion for submarines and $250bn for tax cuts and $14bn per year in fossil fuel subsidies…but apparently we ‘can’t afford’ to invest in health or eduction…BS of course

Maryland's Energy Crisis: A Call for Sustainable Solutions #PJM #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #CarbonPricing #FossilFuelSubsidies #ClimateAction
Maryland’s Energy Crisis: A Call for Sustainable Solutions - Cozzy Energy Solutions
Maryland's Energy Crisis: A Call for Sustainable Solutions As our state grapples with the challenges of a precarious energy situation, it is essential that we take bold action to ensure a cleaner, more resilient future. In this op-ed piece, I, Del. Teresa E. Reilly, representing District 35A, will outline potential solutions to address Maryland's increasing reliance on fossil fuels and transition towards renewable energy sources. The alarming truth is that our state's energy demands are largely met by non-renewable resources, putting us at risk of exacerbating climate change and air pollution. It is imperative that we invest in cutting-edge technologies that can help increase grid resilience and reduce our carbon footprint. Energy storage solutions are a crucial step in this direction. In addition to investing in innovative technologies, I propose encouraging private investment in clean energy projects through tax incentives and collaborative public-private partnerships. By fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurship and innovation, we can unlock new opportunities for growth and job creation in the renewable energy sector. A key component of our transition strategy is implementing a fair and effective carbon pricing mechanism. This would ensure that polluters are held accountable for their emissions, providing a necessary incentive to drive down greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, increasing funding for energy efficiency programs will help reduce demand on the grid, alleviating pressure on our infrastructure. To accelerate progress, I plan to introduce legislation aimed at addressing the root causes of Maryland's energy crisis. This includes a bill that would significantly boost state funding for clean energy projects, a commission to study and recommend policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and a phased-out fossil fuel subsidy program over five years. These measures will provide our state with the necessary tools to transition towards a more sustainable future. As we move forward, it is crucial that we prioritize bold action and decisive leadership to address this pressing issue. I remain committed to finding solutions that benefit the people of District 35A and ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for generations to come.

2️⃣ Only partially. At the time (September 2009), the only data on #fossilfuelsubsidies that the G20 had to hand came from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and related to consumer price support provided via policies that keep domestic prices for fuels below export or import parity.

The Coal Industry's Future in the United States
The Coal Industry's Future in the United States A recent executive order issued by President Trump aims to bolster the coal industry amidst declining demand for fossil fuels. The directive necessitates power plants maintain a minimum level of production to avoid being forced to shut down by grid operators, even if they are no longer economically viable. This measure is anticipated to have significant repercussions on both environmental and economic fronts. Proponents of the coal industry argue that it will help preserve jobs and stimulate local economies; however, opponents counter that it will lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. A key aspect of the executive order is its inclusion of provisions related to renewable energy and energy storage. Although these measures may appear to be steps in the right direction, many analysts believe they fall short of addressing the broader issue of fossil fuel subsidies. The consequences of this executive order could be far-reaching. For instance, it may result in increased air pollution due to higher levels of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants. Furthermore, this increase in energy production could exacerbate climate change by raising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. The potential economic impact of the executive order is also noteworthy. The forced continuation of non-economic power plants could disrupt local economies and cause irreparable harm to communities that have heavily invested in the industry.
