Importante leer "The Role of External Support in Nonviolent Campaigns". Una investigación sobre el impacto de la ayuda internacional en movimientos maximalistas de resistencia civil o campañas no-violentas por cambio político.

As I read the research on effective nonviolent civil resistance, I'm struggling with the realization that we need is for pranksters to take the lead with dilemma actions. Very counter-intuitive.

The 3.5% rule is a concept in political science which states that when 3.5% of the population of a country protest nonviolently against a government, that government is likely to fall from power. The rule was formulated by #EricaChenoweth in 2013.

Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict – Erica Chenoweth, Maria Stephan
For more than a century, from 1900 to 2006, campaigns of nonviolent resistance were more than twice as effective as their violent counterparts in achieving their stated goals. By attracting impressive support from citizens, whose activism takes the form of protests, boycotts, civil disobedience, and other forms of nonviolent noncooperation, these efforts help separate regimes from their main sources of power and produce remarkable results, even in Iran, Burma, the Philippines, and the Palestinian Territories.

If David Brooks is calling for an uprising, maybe we've reached the 3.5% that @EricaChenoweth finds is needed to de-stink the shit of authoritarianism.

This week on Bsky, I learned about the Social Commons Library.

I'm especially delighted to see that it has plenty of links to and summaries of the research of @ericachenoweth, whose work on nonviolent civil resistance is so crucial.

“The definition of #protest is broad. It’s not just going out in the street, raising your fist, and having a bull-horn. It’s writing and reading. #Strikes, #boycotts, #mutualaid, symbolic displays of resistance and #noncompliance —successful protest includes all of these.”

Turns out, nonviolence works — better than bullets. Harvard data backs it up.
