My co-facilitator mentioned today how glad she was that we started this thing two years ago, rather than in response to the current emergency. All respect to any emergency-responsive efforts that are underway — those projects are def needed — but I am grateful our plane was already in flight.

This derailment is also the reason GO Transit's Milton Line exists. CP was told "Give us GO trains or pay the bill for the emergency response. They wisely chose to be good neighbours.
On Nov. 10, 1979, a 106-car freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed and caught fire in Mississauga.
The incident led to the largest evacuation in North American history to that point.
Not a single life was lost.
This is the story of the Mississauga Miracle.

Please apply for this key job on Chicago’s CARE team providing non-police emergency crisis response.
Also, these jobs are paid a fraction of CPD posts that require less education, less skill, and less risk. That’s a reflection of the fact that we live in bullshit police state.

More day shelter space is a start but we also need to activate the winter emergency response sooner, stop discharging people from facilities without proper clothes, and stop confiscating tents and other survival supplies.

I get it, but my guess is that he was going for help. Hauling ass is not necessarily the wrong response in an emergency.
RFK Jr's response to someone collapsing nearby him was to haul ass out of the room as quickly as possible

Eric makes a point that really can’t be overemphasized: policing is an unethical and ineffective response to homelessness
its unjust too
police aren’t homes
police take you to jail
when an emergency is maintained, every day it gets worse
and that’s a policy choice

I am so willing to pay a bit more tax for youth bus passes and bike & roll infrastructure. However, I am concerned that the police budget seems to keep taking a bigger and bigger slice of the pie. More police and bylaw officers is not an effective or ethical response to homelessness. #yyj

Doom note: when middleschoolers have swung toward believing 'humans can't make great art', the emergency response should be ramping up artskills training, and showing them art being made real-time.
Otherwise they'll be Techbro serfs.

I spotted this on Mastodon and I find it horrible, not least for the speed with which this has happened.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge John J. McConnell Jr. on Thursday was in response to a challenge from cities and nonprofits complaining that the administration was only offering to cover 65% of the maximum benefit. The government said it will rely on $4.65 billion on emergency funding.

Eventually, the paid folks become the majority of the department's staffing and run the supermajority of calls.
But the volunteer organization continues to exist, owns the apparatus, the station and often has agreements with the government to have the first right of emergency response.

Is that work emergency really a red alert? Nowadays, more workers are taking a beat to evaluate if that urgent request really warrants an urgent response.
We want to know: What constitutes a "workplace emergency" these days?
After all, odds are no one will die if you don’t forward that report before tomorrow morning.

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY, WE NEED TO ACT LIKE IT!
We are not standing down.
Every day, local community defense groups are still:
Keeping watch at Defense Centers
Supporting families & id'ing those taken
Coordinating observation shifts & rapid response networks throughout the city
