Fun fact: "what colour is the sun?" seems like an easy question with an obvious answer (yellow, duh! 🌞). But it depends on how you define colour, for example, most the energy the sun emits is ~500 nm which means you could argue the sun is blue-green-ish!

Just from at total eclipse you get a serious temperature drop. Idk what things would look like if you extrapolated that line down for 72 straight hours.

Super late reply but NASA actually said they should still be good if the filter isn't damaged. Can still use them for future partial/total eclipses! eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety

listening to beeb news presenters describing the eclipse and adding they haven't experienced it themselves is mildly funny. no mention of the racing shadow bands so far.
(was lucky to see them during a proper eclipse back in 1999)

A bunch of rocks facing each other in an interesting way in a field in Ireland. In 1999, Irish Archeoastronomer Paul Griffin investigated the Loughcrew Cairn L Megalithic Monument in Ireland, and discovered that a set of spiral-shaped petroglyphs that might correspond to a solar eclipse which occurred on November 30, 3340 BCE. The symbols display a consistent coding of the sun, moon and horizon, and of the 92 tracks of total solar eclipses, only the one for 3340 BCE visible at this site displayed the same geometric relationships.

Reminder: Do not use a welder's helmet to view the eclipse if your welder visor has a Shade rating below 12. At least this is NASA's recommendation.
