For #LibFaves24 I am suggesting DIRRAYAWADHA by @dranitaheiss.bsky.social It is an historical novel which speaks of events 200 years ago. It is powerful, bringing First Nations voices to the fore. Make sure you read other books by this author.

I just finished the book club text. I finally got accepted into a book club- the text was Anita Heiss's ##Dirrayawadha -
turned out to be much more of a love than a war story (but it is a really important war story).
Where it all began.

#Dirrayawadha by the fabulous, Prof Anita. I’m just getting to the bit where I’ll become an enraged, emotional mess of empathy, despair and sadness. I can sense it. @dranitaheiss.bsky.social

Had a ball yarning w/ Anjanette Fennell on the Writers Talking podcast. We covered a lot of ground from writing DIRRAYAWADHA to publishing in general, & the important literary agent plays. If you're on a writing or publishing journey, our chat may be of interest.

Dirrayawadha — the Wiradjuri word for ‘rise up’ — neatly captures the storyline of the frontier wars that took place around Bathurst through the lives of Miinaa’s Wiradjuri family and the Irish settlers they live with. A powerful reclaiming of language and of history. #read2025

We’re big fans of @dranitaheiss.bsky.social in this household. Dirrayawadha is currently on the bedside table, loved Tiddas and Growing up Aboriginal; and my daughter loved Manhattan Dreaming and Avoiding Mr Right ❤️🖤💛

I'm the #author of over 25 books (it's been a big few years) across genres. My most recent work is DIRRAYAWADHA (RISE UP) about Wiradyuri resistance, resiliance & love during the frontier wars. The research/writing was challenging but so important.

Book 33 of 2024: Dirrayawadha by Anita Heiss. This was an interesting historical fiction, part Romeo and Juliet but the relationship here is between a Wiradjuri woman and an Irish convict. I found it interesting how they explored their similarities, but they were so different. 📚💙

Tell you what though there is some truly great writing by Aboriginal authors. I was privileged to make cover art for a book of Ali Cobby Eckermann's poetry. My old mate Peter Minter co-edited the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Aboriginal Literature with Anita Heiss, who wrote the excellent Dirrayawadha.
