#climate model
It also ignores the fact that climate as an issue is interlinked with other issues, and many Sierra Club chapters are working to model that.

This is great piece by Nadir Jeevanjee (NOAA GFDL) that summarizes five of the fundamental and accurate model-based climate predictions made by Suki Manabe and colleagues at GFDL over the past half century+. 🧪⚒️

5 forecasts early climate models got right – the evidence is all around you
From rising global temperatures to the fast-warming Arctic, early climate models predicted the changes half a century ago.

“The raid, which came a week before world leaders began arriving for the United Nations climate summit COP30, has pitted leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who called it disastrous, against conservatives who say it is a model to fight organized crime.”

Thanks @rustneversleeps.bsky.social! As a business builder. I have never thought the way to beat climate change was "just stop oil". You have to build the alternatives, which means factories, supply chains, skills, capital formation, etc which takes time. Great to see my little model catching on.
Listening to @volts.wtf recent panel/podcast with @mliebreich.bsky.social , discussing his "Pragmatic Climate Reset", published in two parts at BNEF last September.

Michael mentioned his "simplest energy model ever" - just 4 parameters - and I decided to sketch up and add emissions and temps.

The utter lunacy at every climate-wrecking step of this scandalous business model is hard to overstate: killing old-growth🌲 in BC, trucking them to plants, turning them into pellets, shipping them half-way around the 🌍, then 🔥 them. All subsidized by 🇬🇧 taxpayers. @stand.earth @tzeporah.bsky.social
New @stand.earth report shows that zebras don’t change their stripes.

Drax is STILL sourcing wood from ecological significant forests in BC, still the single biggest carbon emitter in Britain, and still receiving subsidies from the UK Gov.
Drax still burning 250-year-old trees sourced from forests in Canada, experts say
Exclusive: report by Stand.earth says subsidiary of power plant received truckloads of whole logs at biomass pellet sites

Today feels like a good day to remind everyone that there is literally no empirical evidence that economic growth will just continue if the world heats up to, say, 3°C by 2100.

Continued growth is just *assumed* in every economic model of the relationship between temperatures and growth.

Earth can no longer sustain a development model based on intensive use of fossil fuels responsible for planet-harming emissions, Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told a climate summit in the Amazonian city of Belem on Friday ➡️ u.afp.com/Snkg

We get a non-linear signal in the global current system in the oceans...

upper ocean speeds up, deeper ocean slows down, mainly due to stratification

Now we have the first non-linear signal: eddy kinetic energy in the Kuroshio current intensified by 50% the last decade - Gulf stream 20%

Major downside of the click-based business model for media is we can only write the stories our audiences click on. A lot of the axing of climate coverage is simply because those stories don't make money (because readers don't click). Climate journalism is necessary but the ad model won't support it
For any unfamiliar with the quality of journalism at Teen Vogue, it's well known for hard-hitting stories on "politically sensitive" topics including climate.

Then there's CBS: the only major network to increase climate coverage in the last few years. They just axed nearly their whole climate team.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

Yes, it's possible for state policymakers to take meaningful action on climate and address key fiscal needs. The WA model will become even more important for other states to consider if/when the Trump economic blunders create a state fiscal crisis.
With strapped state budgets and federal climate funding slashed, the value of Washington's Climate Commitment Act has never been more clear: it continues to send billions to communities to advance clean energy & resilience - $3.5 billion since it went into effect in 2023. Other states, take note.
With the state strapped for cash, Democrats’ chief budget writer in the Washington Senate has told colleagues there’s no money available for new spending they might desire next year.

I know of no scenario that gets us to climate safety without a price on emissions. The free-to-pollute business model is now lethal.

Here are my three truths about climate:
1. We fail if we don’t end free-to-pollute fossil fuel model. Period. Game over.
2. A crash looms, prefigured by collapse in home insurance/mortgage markets.
3. There are true villains in the story, and we have to tell it that way.

And then there's that whole thing about AI data centers which I suspect is the reason tech bros, like Bill Gates notably, are shifting their positions on climate change to an innovation centric model.
Because the AI beast needs all the electrons.

AI brings soaring emissions for Google and Microsoft, a major contributor to climate change
The tech giants both report surges in greenhouse gas emissions as they double-down on adding artificial intelligence to all of their products.

Not preparing for catastrophic outcomes simply because they're not certain, or even the most likely, is like driving 90 mph late at night with your lights off after drinking a bottle of gin and thinking it'd be bad luck to wear a seatbelt. Or staying home on election day in 2016 or 2024.
