Snippet from my women’s fiction / litfic WIP:

Sitting across the small dining room table from Steve at their home, Micah opened her mouth and took in a forkful of spaghetti.

"I thought you were going to eat early."

He shook his head. "I was, but I got distracted, I guess. By the time I started dinner, you were almost home."

As her teeth crunched the pasta, she looked away from her husband, whose self-satisfied grin evaporated.

"What's wrong, honey?"

She swallowed the shards of marinara-covered noodles. "Nothing."

"I mean, what d'you think about dinner?"

"It's not bad..." she trailed off as she attempted to pick up another portion of her meal with scraping tines.

Shaking his head, he mumbles, "I'll turn the heating up." He comes to the thermostat near where I'm standing. With his back to me, he turns the dial before taking his T-shirt off.
I'd ask why he's removed his shirt if I wasn't too busy admiring his back and shoulder blades. He twists around and holds the shirt up for me. Now, the sight of his abs and the hollow beneath his throat distracts me. Even if I knew what he wanted me to do with his shirt, I wouldn't be able to move. It's almost too much that he has an amazing body to go with his beautiful face.
"Here, put this on and stand near the radiator." His voice snaps me out of my trance and I blink at him. He draws in an exasperated breath and dresses me in his T-shirt. To warm me up as the heating kicks in. If he was in a jumper, I guess he would have taken that off for me. Which is really sweet.
Then, he retreats to his room.
I don't hear from him until after 2pm, when I'm curled up in bed, sniffling.

The water was already cooling by the time he rinsed the last of the suds from his hair.

Eventually, he shut off the water with a reluctant twist and stepped out into the bathroom, dragging a towel from the nearby rack.

Margaret had left him a change of clothes. Simple things—but to Judah, they may as well have been robes sewn from silk.

A long-sleeved shirt, slightly too big, but sleeves riding short on his forearms. Sweatpants tied at the waist, still baggy around his thin hips. He looked like a scarecrow in hand-me-downs, but he didn’t care.

It wasn’t white.

And the best fucking part?

Socks and shoes.

The robot swordsman yanked itself free of the car and took a step down onto the pavement, five feet from Leon’s position. That sparking blade scorched the air as it pointed right at his heart.
“You take the work of the hands of the people of New Anchorage and attribute it to yourself,” the robot said. “You take the livelihoods of innocent citizens and hold them at arm’s length until they can purchase your permission just to exist. You tangle security, economy, industry and culture around yourself like the knotted web of a spider. You deny support to those who dearly need it. You sit upon a throne built of the ashes of broken lives.”

Currently extremely envious of fantasy writers who can just use Earth as their basis and not have to come up with dozens of made-up things. (This is me. I am this fantasy writer.)

I fear I may not actually be suited to write secondary worlds.
