Oh, if I log out of WebPageTest, I can go back to the old interface and actually get some work done. At least until tomorrow when we're all forced to use the new ui.

Are there alternatives? to WebPageTest?
October 22, 2025 at 10:28 PM
Tomorrow we lose access to the current version of WebPageTest and will be forced into the new version. I’m dreading the switch. Experiments are a HUGE step backwards and I use them all the time. The interface may be consistent with Catchpoint UI, but it is boring and confusing if all you use is WPT.

Did you know that how the network is throttled when running a page speed test impacts metrics?

🛠️ DevTools throttling is a simple minimum request duration
🏡 Lighthouse only simulates a slow-down
🐻 DebugBear & WebPageTest introduce a packet-level delay

Step 1 — Audit every asset.

Run Lighthouse, WebPageTest, or your own script to list images, scripts, and styles.

Flag anything over 200 KB or that loads before paint.

Those are your first bottlenecks.

qantas.com is SLOW. product & engineering there mustn't have telemetry of the user experience. AND they pay for datadog.

Building web speed tracker to fix
v1: WebPageTest + PageSpeed + history + alerts.
v2: flow bottleneck + slow click detection
v3?: run in CI to prevent regressions
v4?: auto PRs

This is why I am glad I leave the granular investigation to real devs. I hung up my dev hat years ago. & You lost me after your "I,m done, right?" Moment. 🤷‍♂️😬

I do GPSI, + WebPageTest reports. I get devs enough to deep dive. That's it.

Working at midnight. WebPageTest has no less than three dozen tests in front of the line for any of the server locations I need to test from.

I guess I won't be testing WPT speeds on this audit tonight.

🤷‍♂️

But of course, I dumped that URL in WebPageTest to see what's happening under the hood. Always good to randomly look at how sites are built, and their performance + likely ux. There's always a teachable moment. If you're also curious (and are into it):

I’ve been afraid to enable the new UI for #WebPageTest because I wasn't certain I would be able to get back to the old UI.

But I took the leap today hoping I would find an easier way to run experiments blocking domains.

Has anyone else switched to the new UI yet? What is your impressions?

🏁 Sharing a link to the #webperf testing tool book that is again quietly used basically by many of the pros in the enterprise front end space, like engineers at google (which I personally know to be true). Curious? Check out why in the link below. Enjoy!

WebPageTest has for MANY MANY years been the standard in web performance testing. The granular detail that it brings to anyone wishing to use it can provide the level of data that could only get you investigating issues that likely at the root of bottlenecks. 🧵⬇️
