Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) in Selm Muir Forest, West Lothian today. Incredibly mild weather today and I think it was attracted to the lights I was using to photograph fungi. #Wasps #Insects #Nature #Photography #Nikon #Macro #WestLothian #Scotland

Vespula Maculifrons, the eastern yellowjacket. We see a lot of these around the northeast US. They are either motivated solely by malice and hate or just want some space around their living areas.

The yellow-legged hornet has distinctive dark legs with bright yellow tips. In contrast, common wasp species in New Zealand, such as the German wasp (Vespula germanica), typically have uniformly yellow or yellow-striped legs. It is also much larger than honey bees & common wasp species.

This is another yellowjacket I've found recently. It's going into a decorative jar with the others. The first layer of the jar is all rose thorns. Then stinging creatures. Maybe broken glass will be next. Bone shards. Twisted metal.

Just making a hostile little art piece.

Vespula germanica (German wasp) on thistle saying hello. I used to be phobic and now I like to photograph their lovely little faces

There’s a story here … maybe Beetle (Order Coleoptera) vs. Western Yellowjacket (Vespula pensylvanica) vs. Gold Dust Day Gecko (Phelsuma laticauda)—Not pictured, but there were several lurking nearby. Waikahekaheiki, Puna, Hawaiʻi.

Ik hoop dat de wespenkoninginnen van volgend jaar intussen een veilig plekje hebben gevonden om in diapause te gaan. Deze had dat, maar het lijkt erop dat er een gat in haar achterlijf is ontstaan (?). Gewone wesp (Vespula vulgaris). #ElkeDagEenInsect

European wasps are serious pests in parts of Melbourne and Victoria en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vespula... I presume these are the same.

Queen common wasp, I think. They're bigger than the workers you usually see. Markings don't match either the European hornet or the Asian hornet.

It's a little confusing too because not all yellow wasps are yellow jackets! Genus Polistes vs Vespula - Vespula tend to have a shorter fuse especially as autumn approaches, and require a wider berth from their nests. Most "umbrella" wasps who just build under open overhangs are Polistes.

The defendant is a WASP who bumbled into trouble. He tried to escape on his Vespula Scooter, but he was caught in a raid.

🌿 This morning, a visit from 6 or 7 sparrows, the usual great tits and blue tits, a robin (first time), a magpie, some usual Asian hornet & wasps, and the very discreet female lizard who comes to chew the 2-3 mealworms that have fallen to the ground :)

#ElkeDagEenInsect

Vespula pensylvanica locate odor sources across diverse natural wind conditions bioRxivpreprint
Vespula pensylvanica locate odor sources across diverse natural wind conditions
Many organisms across ecosystems track odor plumes to locate mates and food. In flying insects, the task of localizing an odor source is particularly challenging due to the complicated dynamics associated with wind flow and odor plume dispersion through spatially complex environments. Although wind tunnel experiments have been instrumental for answering many questions related to olfactory search, such experiments cannot replicate the complexity of natural wind conditions. Thus, our knowledge of how real-world wind characteristics influence insects&' success and strategies to locate odor sources remains an open area of investigation. Here, we tested whether certain wind conditions were more favorable for foraging insects by comparing yellowjacket arrival times and corresponding wind conditions across three distinct natural environments. Our results indicate that Vespula pensylvanica are capable of locating odor sources across the full range of observed wind conditions, without any clear preferences. This suggests that insects have adapted strategies to perform odor localization tasks across the full spectrum of natural wind that they may encounter. Our field-based approach provides insight into key considerations for future wind tunnel experiments which seek to better resolve insect plume tracking in understudied flow regimes.
