The quote continues: “ how much integrity and authenticity and creative vitality filled these numbered days, these unrepeatable hours” I've been thinking about the third act in a life. ​My life, to be exact. There are people (mostly very wealthy people) who are trying to add multiple acts to a lifespan. And there are people who are more focused on the legacy they will leave behind, be it statues or street names or towers or ballrooms. And we are a society focused on productivity: how much can you do, how much MORE can you do, how fast can you do it. Which leaves very little time or energy for just, well, living. Admittedly, these are things I have the luxury of time, resources and near-retirement to contemplate. But wouldn't it be worthwhile if we directed the ship of our lives toward integrity, authenticity and creative vitality​ from the get-go? I try to imagine how my life would have unfolded if I had not been taught to do more, do better, do faster and instead had been taught to slow down, be curious, be true to myself. ​I don't have all the answers - no, no, NO! It’s that time of year when the old women are cleaning out the attic, metaphorically, if not actually. I’ve been doing both. I’ve been thinking a great deal about what is no longer philosophically useful in my life and jettisoning those ideas. (Mostly in response to the new regime…) But I have also been actually rooting around in the storage spaces of this house, boxing up the stuff that I think other people can use, perhaps that other people might be inclined to buy.

There are other wonderings, not least the horrors of the wars of the twenty-first century, and the need to find a way to somehow set aside fear and difference and to give peace and tenderness a chance.
Delete Contact Card It’s happening more often now— going through my contacts list I find the name of an old friend, a decade or more older than me, with whom I spent sunlit afternoons, laughing and talking about life and poetry and I don’t delete the card— as though a computer list could hold a soul for a month, a year, or more in some limbo or bardo. Rain falls on the red bushes; the talkative postman still delivers books and letters, and, with a small thump, a goldfinch lands on the window feeder. Life does go on without the dead and, no matter how much we wish it, we won’t ever know for certain whether or not the dead watch over us until our own cards await deletion. What we do know now, better than we used to, is the worth of that honeycomb of hours spent laughing and talking— the sunwashed, unwasted hours of human contact.

Day Officially Unwasted. Leaky, pinched dishwasher inlet hose replaced. Hatred of dishwashers and whoever installed the old hose, renewed.
But at least the door won't pinch this one!
