In males, fetal and childhood/adolescence age are marked by increased pro-inflammatory response accompanied by higher vulnerability to neurodevelopmental disorders. On the other hand, adult females have increased pro-inflammatory responses and increased vulnerability to affective disorders. During old age, females are more prone to develop Alzheimer’s disease, while presenting decreased inflammatory response Immunological changes in the fetal brain in response to injury or dysfunction during pregnancy are sex-dependent and related to the development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Infection during pregnancy activates the mother’s immune system, which releases pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, TNF, and others. These cytokines pass through to the developing fetus enhance the production of fetus-derived cytokines and initiate a neuroinflammation cascade.
