#SynBioBeta
How do we connect synthetic biology policy, innovation and communication, worldwide?

Fiona Mischel, Director of International Outreach at SynBioBeta, will share her insights from engaging with international organizations at the 2025 iGEM Grand Jamboree!

Just say'n. (I got this shotglass at Josie Zaynor's "How to edit your genome with CRISPR" demonstration at SynbioBeta 2017)

What the actual fuck is this racist and eugenics supporting nonsense, synbiobeta ?

Catching up on overdue reading on the train. Ever excellent @jsundman.bsky.social gives us all something to think about on pt2 of his synbiobeta essay. The bit on Jim Kent's role in the human genome project is something I want to follow up on 🧪

Although the SynbioBeta conference was a big disappointment in this regard, it has been gratifying to see prominent scientists boldly speaking up in other venues. Greg Poland, Chair of the World Vaccine Congress, is one shining example.

In early May I attended SynbioBeta, a large & influential synthetic biology conference. None of the prominent scientists speaking from the main stage even mentioned what's going on. But oligarchicly-funded science was prominent & celebrated. I was dismayed. And depressed. 1/2

Synthetic biology, oligarchicly-funded vs publicly funded science, George Church & the dire wolf brouhaha, the unsung hero of the Human Genome Project, biopunks, cowardice at Synbiobeta 2025, and the fate of humanity.

I put my heart into this 👇 essay about synthetic biology, oligarchicly-funded vs publicly funded science, George Church & the dire wolf brouhaha, the unsung hero of the Human Genome Project, biopunks, cowardice at #synbiobeta 2025, and the fate of humanity. Thanks for any help promoting it.
In the words of vaccinologist Greg Poland, history will judge all of us by whether we did or did not stand up for science when the fate of the world was in play. At "The World's Largest Gathering of Synthetic Biologists," many prominent scientists failed this test. We can and must do better. 🧪

I'm writing part 2 of my essay on synbiobeta. In it I say that when I first heard about the dire wolf stuff I assumed Church was involved & did my best to learn nothing further about it. Then you told me about the New Yorker story. I gave up & read it on on the flight to San Jose for SBB.

Agenda for today:
- Helping Dear Wife Betty get her legendary annual back porch garden going. Plants, potting soil, etc have been purchased. Today gardening begins.
- Writing part 2 of my report on the SynbioBeta conference, with attention to oligarchic vs publicly-funded science.

Laters, peeps!

Another great read from @jsundman.bsky.social - recent SynBioBeta conference from perspective of a science fiction writer.

That Carl Sagan quote continues to be very timely.

Thank you, Simon. You are right, that is exactly the kind of thing I wish I had heard at #synbiobeta.

I encourage everyone to take the 8 or so minutes necessary to listen to this passionate, beautiful and important address.

A #synbiobeta synthetic biology conference last week in San Jose I found some amazing technology that I dreamed up 25 years ago now made real, lots of astonishing science, a full-of-shit United States senator, and an industry afraid to acknowledge what's being done to science in America.

There was lots of cool science at the #synbiobeta synthetic biology conference in San Jose last week — not to mention some awesome technology that I dreamed up 25+ years ago! But there was also a lot of what I can only call cowardice in the face of MAGA's war on science. Please share. 🧪

Working on a draft of my first — of probably several —report(s) on this past week’s SynbioBeta synthetic biology conference in San Jose.

Provisional title for my essay: "I was in the house when the house burned down."

Stay tuned, but as always, comments welcome.

a C+ student review of an article or protocol? sure

an IND filing? I know a lot of extremely smart people who have been working on this for five years and they’re still not there yet

I just got back from SynBioBeta and there is so much unfounded hype, this crash is gonna suck

This guy was on the main stage yesterday at Synbiobeta synthetic biology conference. I've had encounters with him before & didn't bother this time. Outside the hall a friend said "I think people are close to exploiting his mental illness. Seriously, the man is not well." She wasn't joking.

The challenge of #biomanufacturing and scale-up is a perennial topic at SynBioBeta. Hard stories of failure can motivate companies to adopt better, more interoperable standards. 😀 #synbiobeta2025

At Synbiobeta conference in San Jose I just watched a 5 minute video by Senator Todd Young & a 20 minute talk by the Director of the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology. From my notes: "Am I tripping? What am I hearing? Have I gone insane???"

Alternate universe shit, fer sher.

The periodicals Nature & Science, and dozens of scientific institutions, and professional organizations of scientists, and 100+ prominent US scientists, among others, have declared the situation of science in the USA a 5-alarm fire. But at #synbiobeta, things are fine. 4/5
