The dead dragon filled the top of the valley, its head on the long neck partially blocking the little stream. "Well, they smell as bad dead as they do alive," Blocker said, shifting in his saddle to look up into the cirque, and the vast scaly bulk of the thing. "Worse maybe. How long is she going to be, you reckon?" Ton the outrider jumped down from the streamside rock and gathered his pony's reins. "She comes down now." Blocker turned his horse down the valley and called to his little troop of Shindo, "Hai! Fall in behind her," he said in din Shin. He was riding his sure-footed mare and turned in the saddle to look back up the valley as the Amershan picked her way among the stream-side boulders. As she came down the stream her big gelding was not as confident in the rocks as Blocker's mare. The chief priest on his mule apparently knew enough not to try to hurry his mount and the other priests or acolytes or whatever they were scrambled through the rocks on foot. She was well ahead of the ecclesiastical party when she came level with Blocker.

Cindy discussed preliminary results for morphology and endurance performance of the Streamside salamander (𝑨𝒎𝒃𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒎𝒂 𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒊) at 20 months of age and addressed knowledge gaps on how temperatures during embryogenesis can have lasting effects on the organism.

The #GreatLakes lake sturgeon population is currently around 1% of historic levels. Restoring those populations takes time and stocking fish is an important part of the work. Streamside rearing trailers (like mini fish hatcheries) grow fish in their first year to be released.

Meet the lesser goldfinch (Spinus psaltria)!

This yellow-bellied songbird can be found in a variety of habitats including open brushy country, open woods, streamside areas, and gardens.

Its habitat stretches from Washington State all the way to the Peruvian Andes.

A small overgrown waterfall cascades down the left side of the bank formed by a stone ledge. Although it was difficult to get to down a short steep, slippery trail (beware: trail books mark it as "easy"), it was a peaceful view watching the clear water rush by. A yellow bird with a black hood on its head and a dark gray back sits in the middle of branches and leaves. I thought it would never be visible enough to get a picture of it. Warblers are tricky like that. But it was a beautiful day and nice to sit streamside and wait.

An easy hike along the Doe river in eastern Tennessee leads to a wide waterfall with a large viewing area just downstream of the falls that would be great for a picnic. A few up and downs along the way provide some elevation gains interspersed between the streamside walk along the Appalachian Trail.

Lon Chaney's hut, halfway up The Lakes trail out of Big Pine Canyon, in California's Eastern Sierra (a great place to stop for a while on one of my fave day hike trails). It's now owned by the NPS.

Something, back in the streamside willows, had this muledeer doe with ears forward & on "alert". She kept going back & forth & kept her twins in the middle of the yard. We've had sev muledeer taken by mtn lions on the place over the years. She stayed on hi alert for 1/2 hr. Never saw cause.

Very nearly missed jointing my own thumb with an oyster knife. I have since learned a much safer way to shuck irregularly-shaped wild oysters - but i also recommend buying cultured ones instead
