Incidentally, I'd contemplated the same scenario a few years ago with a much angstier angle. Still pretty proud of how that comic turned out, even if it's not canon!

Io, a dark-skinned androgynous human, blushes as they look at L'ira, a grey elf girl. She stands before them, smiling. L'ira: Actually... I used to look more like this. Io approaches L'ira, reaching to caress her face. The two are smiling at one another. Io: L'ira... You're even more adorable than I imag-- The text is cut off as Io's hand bumps against an invisible form, stopping them just short of actually making contact with L'ira's face. The final panel reveals the invisible form that Io's hand is pressed against is the breastplate of L'ira's current robot body, who looks down at the slightly disappointed Io. The elf version of L'ira is superimposed within her robot body, looking down sadly. Narration: "Disguise Self", first-level illusion. You make yourself -- including your clothing, armor, weapons, and other belongings on your person -- look different until the spell ends. The changes wrought by this spell fail to hold up to physical inspection.

L'ira once had a breastplate that let her cast Disguise Self and she used it to show off her original body. But "show off" doesn't mean "actually become" as Io found out while trying to be smooth. 😛

Theran captured the memory for them, of course.

Io is giving an enormously awkward and slightly embarrassed smile as L'ira giggles at them. Io holds the previous image as a photo in their hand with an embarrassed, slightly grumpy look. To their right stands L'ira, a tall copper robot-- the current form of the elf girl in the photo-- who is still giggling and gently patting the top of their head. To their left stands Theran, an elf wizard who is smiling as he has just finished materializing the photo into existence. Io: Thanks, Theran... Theran: But of course! L'ira: Tee hee!

Io is a changeling with no concept of marital surnames.
L'ira is an elf-turned-warforged who -very much- has the concept of marital surnames.

Second panel: "Wanna get a better one?" Io asks nonchalantly, catching L'ira's attention. Third panel: Kithri (a halfling) appears, a hand raised in concern. "Did... did you just propose?" Io shrugs in annoyance. "No??? It was a legitimate question wtf are you talking about?" L'ira is speechless and releasing excessive amounts of steam, which is her robot body's equivalent to blushing.

Expectations: Io bridal carries L'ira in her elven form, the two of them blushing happily and being lovey-dovey. Reality: Io strains beneath the weight of trying to lift L'ira in her much larger warforged form. An exasperated L'ira says, "Literally nobody said you had to do this." while Io responds, "I WILL SNAP EVERY ONE OF MY VERTEBRAE FOR YOU"
