It was a pleasure to hear from Charles Takalana, Secretariat of the African Astronomical Society, at #SPIEastro this morning!

Along with sharing a history of Africa’s astronomy achievements, he provided an overview of how Africa is preparing to “host the world” for IAU General Assembly in August. 🔭

The mid-IR ELT instrument METIS recently passed its final design review and is making great progress. METIS is effectively the ground-based cousin of MIRI on JWST, so we mid-infrared folks are very excited about it. #SPIEastro

Sturm: the long duration of ELT-scale instrumentation is a major problem for personnel management: at odds with short fixed-term contracts & difficult to retain expertise. As a former postdoc working on these projects, I strongly concur with this assessment! #SPIEastro
