Major parties who have had a permanent woman leader: Tories, LibDems, Greens, SNP, Plaid, Sinn Fein, DUP, SDLP, Alliance. Even UKIP had one for about five minutes, so I’m going to chalk that up to Reform.

Major parties who have only ever had a stand-in woman leader: Labour.

not at the moment. the no confidence had an overwhelming majority vote against Givan but it required cross-community consent or the leader of the DUP to do the right thing and remove him from office.

SDLP have tabled a new motion to make it easier but I think it's end of days for Stormont.

Do you have any questions for Translink? Gary and I are meeting them tomorrow to discuss a range of issues from bus fares, to reliability, to the Durham Street works and the next phase of Grand Central Station. Drop your questions in the comments.

Certain cross-community & minority protections were understandable in 1998, but for votes like this now it just stunts democracy

NI isn't a nation Andrew. It's a region and it's heading for reunification with Ireland soon. It becomes part of Ireland again.

mid terms in oct look like this:

Reunification/EU: 54%
Unionist/brexit: 41%
Independents: 5%

the opposite is true. brexit has brought forward the topic of reunification in NI by about 25 years.

This is what the NI assembly mid terms looks like, Oct 2025:

Reunification/Pro EU: 54%
Unionist/brexit: 41%
Independents: 5%

🚦 Build Our Crossing! A great turnout on a cold morning for a community conversation about our shared frustration with DfI, and their failure to build the Knockbreda Road crossing which was promised five years ago.

Our Nowcast for the next NI Assembly.

☘️ SF — 22
🦁 DUP — 17
🤝 AP — 12
🔷 UUP — 10
🌹 SDLP — 12
Ⓣ TUV — 12
✊ PBP — 2
🌱 GP — 2
⚫ Ind — 1

There's a tightening battle within unionism as the TUV reel in the DUP.

Alliance and Sinn Féin are also on the slide, with the Greens and SDLP ticking up.

Rejoining the EU is a side issue to the question, it's relevant to the politics but it is not central in the way that the border poll and the union or nation question is.

The likely success of a border poll will not be determined by offhandedly adding the Alliance Party vote to the SF-SDLP total.
November 7, 2025 at 12:26 PM
That aggregation of bloc votes is contentious. If you don't have a majority of the vote explicitly in favour of a border poll, it isn't going to happen. You can't just add the Alliance Party to the actual pro-unification SF-SDLP and call it job done.
November 7, 2025 at 11:22 AM
the mid terms look like this:

Reunification/Pro EU: 54%
Unionist/brexit: 41%
Independents: 5%

And public polls in July 2025 have remain in EU at 77% (United Ireland in EU at 67%)
November 7, 2025 at 11:13 AM
We all know that elected MPs from all out progressive parties now = 82% but Reform = 0.06% . Broadcasters should be under obligations from OfCom & Culture Secretary to reflect that UK parliamentary representation including Lab,Libs,Greens,SNP,PC,SDLP, Alliance and Independents who out number Reform
November 7, 2025 at 8:27 AM
they make the assumption that 100% of S's vote would go to Cuomo, a stupid assumption. Some of those would be plumpers (him or stay home), and some would vote for M. There have been LibDems - Reform switchers, and vice versa in the UK for example. DUP/SDLP transfers in NIre, etc.
November 6, 2025 at 10:50 AM
Yeah. The "Union" is finished. That much is clear. the life expectancy of the UK is less than 10 years now, with NI on the cusp of a border poll.

The mid term polls in NI look like this.

Reunification/EU: 54%
Unionist/brexit: 41%
Independents: 5%
November 4, 2025 at 2:25 PM
Lots of us in the UK have always had a choice of progressive parties, as 3 of the nations have SF/SDLP, SNP, or PC. Scotland & Wales have Greens and Lab too, and voting systems where coalitions are encouraged. I think it's a very English thing, to want only one big party.

Stormont Education minister Paul Givan has defended asking his officials to publicise a visit he made to a school in Israel, saying it was a “strictly non-political” message.

It follows criticism by Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald, the SDLP and Alliance.

The British army did lots of awful things. I think the IRA killed more civilians. They had very little public support in either part of Ireland. In Northern Ireland Roman Catholics generally voted for the SDLP.

mid term polls for the NI assembly echo the public polls amongst the three main communities in NI now, i.e. Green, Orange and Unaligned.

Unaligned voters don't care about flags. They just care about jobs, health, education etc.

Reunification/EU: 54%
Unionist/brexit: 41%
Independents: 5%

Yes Alliance, we know there’s issues with needing cross-community support for this kind of vote. But the right thing is the right thing. Do it!
