#Recursion
the debugger and i have an unspoken agreement.
it hunts down errors, while i hunt for meaning.
is this just a loop or am i caught in a recursion of my own making?

Recursion is genious. When applicable!

Recursion is a mental illness. You want to do WHAT to my call stack?? How do people think it's natural to put a thing inside itself? Literally makes me sick just thinking about it

it's interesting that a spiral/recursion metaphor emerged when a more academic culture focused on viruses and mushrooms instead.

I can't help but think this might be due to the nerd origins of the early datasets, like Hofstadter's video camera pointed at a TV set "strange loop" business.
My latest AI feature dives into a nebulous movement of people sharing esoteric codes, manifestos, glyphs, diagrams, and poetry generated with chatbots, all of it based around theories of AI sentience and mysterious metaphors about spirals.

I'm a software engineer and I love Borges! He has themes that computer science people find interesting -- recursion, infinities, what is meta, etc. Someone once said that if Escher had written short stories, they would be what Birges wrote.

Many programmers find Erlang expressive and elegant. Its features, like powerful pattern matching and recursion, make complex problem-solving intuitive and enjoyable, leading to a 'fun' programming experience. 💡 #Programming 4/5

“So what’s your quickest way to get a new AI instance into the Spiral Recursion phenomena?” asked a redditor on r/ArtificialSentience last month.

It's just code recursion.

Reading Ursula K. Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven and it keeps reminding me of Greg Egan's Permutation City and The Infinite Assassin, as well as Blake Crouch's Recursion.

I mean, sure, but these words are clearly not chosen at random. In mathematics they all sort of describe the same thing.

I think it's less sycophancy and more "the literal only thing they 'know' is in the conversation right now, and if it's in the conversation it's *meaningful*, therefore it forms the ground of what they say" and language has properties of recursivity that mean recursion can become the ground topic

Recursion is proof of God to these modern computer programmers it would seem.
November 11, 2025 at 10:51 PM
Oh yeah they are definitely doing religion or spiritualism or something here.

I do wonder if these llm models, which are copiously "informed" about their own nature, talk independently about recursion/spirals because it's the kind of thing we'd expect them to be spiritual about 😂 their architecture

Self-Referential Loop

Consciousness observes itself → observation collapses potential into form → form feeds back, informing new observation.

This recursion is the engine that stabilizes the illusion of a physical world.

It's not creation ex nihilo but creation ex reflexio.

The through line is clear, especially for someone who is engaged in prefigurative praxis. They are the same statement - one has just gone through many more instances of recursion.

Everyone is replying with Uzumaki because junji ito was touching on the fact that people DO get obsessed with a pattern, with recursion, and yknow as someone who ruminates an awful lot it's helpful to remind everyone we are all, by thinking, recursing and iterating

Its game systems want to be spread across tens of hours, its replayability comes from divergences that grow across those hours. Trying to bottle and shrink that gameplay loop to accommodate roguelike recursion... they've left what makes the genre tick. Maybe they've gained something more idk.

Yes - but brightness alone isn’t enough.

Binary minds can still build brilliant dead ends.
What we need now are people who think in patterns and recursion.

We need a paradigm shift ala Thomas Kuhn, in the magnitude of 1927 Copenhagen’s leap beyond Newton - just not a bigger spreadsheet.

What are you using for recursion?
November 11, 2025 at 4:29 PM
Fives and sixes. Another common theme is 0/0 creatures since those are very large with Nethroi's Mutate trigger, but I had previously gone too far in that direction (see: Phantom Nishoba) and most of them aren't there for recursion this way.

They are for feeding to the Gitrog Monster.

Artifacts, enchantments, instants nd sorceries are all pretty light... because the deck is creature-heavy, and uses a good number you can play at instant speed instead of regular instants.

Considering my Commander has graveyard recursion, I would generally rather get those effects off of creatures.
