Hard to build an authoritarian regime when there are regular and frequent institutionalized elections -- Przeworski strikes again!

👇🎯 It’s incredible how many folks on this website have either convinced themselves/pretend to believe that only one half of the political spectrum will exist in the future or that the left/Democrats are going to somehow win every election in the future. There is no country where it works like that.

"Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections"

This is something folks dismissed & said, "Why are you wasting your time on something so unimportant?" when in fact, it was the most important thing of all. "Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections." If you won't even call the opposition party by its name, you don't support democracy.

Oh, goody, look who gets to be thrown under the bus.

"As the political scientist Adam Przeworski points out, Polish pro-democracy forces won only when they agreed to leave aside their bitter divisions over abortion until after they had succeeded."
"It wanted to signal strength. Instead, it’s revealing its weakness. The administration’s need to break the academy is forcing it to make a desperately risky gamble." www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/o...

Bolsonaro, o cientista politico Adam
Przeworski afirma que a condenação do ex-presidente e de militares de alto escalão por tentativa de golpe de Estado é um sinal da força das instituições brasileiras.

An outstanding interview. Patrick Iber of Dissent Magazine has interviewed the legendary Polish political scientist Adam Przeworski about de-democratisation in the USA, and what lessons he’s gleaned from Chile, Peru & beyond.

Iber’s questions are stellar. Przeworski’s answers, chillingly candid.

Przeworski also offered some refreshingly frank words on how little we often know. This fact about Juan Linz, a great intellectual partner to my late mentor, the wonderful scholar Alfred Stepan, is a gem.

Contingency, as Stepan often told me, is key. Never lose sight of it.

To be fair the analogy doesn’t quite work. Przeworski is open about the uncertainty in political science models about what might happen, whereas climate models produced pretty good predictions. Still the possibility of catastrophic consequences of Trumpism is very real

The dynamics Przeworski IDs here also hastened democratic backsliding in Tunisia & Turkey.

Democracy’s assassins were Saied & Erdogan. But the body politic was vulnerable partly bc Ennahda Party in Tunisia, & CHP in Turkey, became perceived as parties that hold seats rather than parties of vision.

Przeworski says it cleanly, clearly, and convincingly.

What then must we do?

As Adam Przeworski and Juan Linz wrote, in a healthy democracy, the current government is always the government pro tempore. You are temporary. A situation that gives the governing party the right incentives. You will be in the minority. www.cambridge.org/core/books/d...

Well, you can use minimalist definitions (Schumpeter, Downs, Riker, Przeworski), you can use maximalist or pluralist definitions (Dahl), something in between them (Acemoglu and Robinson), even some deeply normative and philosophical definitions like deliberative democracy by Habermas. Results

Przeworski doesn't model an "I don't care" faction, you know?

I have my own disagreements with Przeworski, particularly about his understanding of the relationship between democracy and authoritarianism. But, of course, his contribution to democracy and authoritarianism studies cannot be and should not be overlooked. Here is the latest interview with him.
