By Cynthia McClintock* Photographs from the early hours of the Generation Z protest in Peru, 2025(Source: Wikimedia Commons) Since 2021, democratic backsliding has been severe in Peru, and Peruvians are furious. Peru’s Congress is loathed. In 2025, the approval rating for Peru’s President, Dina Boluarte, fell below 3 percent and she became the most unpopular president on the planet.

Evidence from research led by @sydney.edu.au archaeologist Dr Jacob Bongers suggests Peru's mysterious 'Band of Holes' was once an ancient barter marketplace and later turned into an accounting system for gathering tribute.

There's a remarkable & beautiful Katherinne Fiedler work (vimeo.com/1025532299) about Peru's National Museum, completed in 2021 but unused & lived in by stray dogs. It's about heritage, nature, culture & politics. But the curator's text removes all poetry or explanation of dogs, context & premise.

the most important fact I learned from an article about Peru and Mexico having a diplomatic standoff is that the former PM of Peru's name is "Betssy Betzabet Chávez Chino"

Let's say Peruvian farmers export more fruit to American consumers. Given Peru's internal imbalances, these higher exports will allow higher overall imports, but not necessarily from the US. Peru can balance higher fruit exports to the US with higher EV imports from China.

In Peru’s public restrooms, you pay an attendant and get the equivalent of 3 squares of TP! Luckily I always carried some in my daypack.

5️⃣ Peru’s new president seems nervous. Unlike Naboa, he has a good reason

Protests toppled the predecessor of Peru’s sparkling new interim president, José Jerí, who herself was an interim president after the arrest of her predecessor.

They want a 2.0

An ex partner’s family came from Peru’s upper class and it was the same there. Utterly humorless and hyper fixated on appearances.
Many Dems who grew up with wealth sincerely do not know how to talk in a casual register. People assume they do it at home, but my ex husband’s aunt married into WASP upper class, and let me assure you - they don’t, not even with family. This is also why many of them have to script jokes.

“Peru’s parallel powers have carved the country up into a patchwork of fiefs — ones in which Indigenous leaders, environmentalists, journalists and civilians who try to resist are harassed and killed as unscrupulously and with almost as much impunity as in many dictatorships,” Will Freeman writes.
