Important thread.

I find it interesting that "overmedicalisation of commonplace problems" is almost invariably brought up as a concern when talking about neurodivergence or mental health, but not, say, osteoarthritis, short sightedness or dental cavities.

I had a speech impediment and an obvious case of ADHD growing up. Combo of sexism and my parents hating overmedicalisation meant the cure for both was drama class. Now you umderstand everything.

should i try to get anxiety meds i know we're against overmedicalisation and the way the pharmaceutic industry works but lord have mercy i can't keep living like this

Timimi’s conclusion is bold: ADHD is not a valid medical diagnosis. It’s a culturally constructed response to behaviours we’ve decided are problems. Its rise is driven by pharmaceutical marketing, overmedicalisation, and a loss of tolerance for normal child development.

This sounds exactly up my street – will definitely be reading it. I’ve talked a lot about overmedicalisation, it’s perhaps my most common video theme, and overdetection. But when it comes to overdiagnosis esp of psych/neuro disorders, I have been reticent. I really liked @lucyfoulkes.bsky.social’s:

Also, a lot of “critical” people who might be interested in such a field actually support psychsomatics. Because their critique often talks about “overmedicalisation” and they see psychosomatics (and its modern form, wellness culture) as more “holistic” and “biopsychosocial”.

There are concerns that there may be overdiagnosis and overmedicalisation, but a quick look at Scholar shows it hasn't been adequately studied. So really, who knows, but certainly not any of the journalists kicking up a fuss.

Completely irrelevant to the topic. Blood in your poo woud be consistent; not a one-off. I'd hope you could see the difference but if you can't, you may be part of the overmedicalisation problem.

I think it's the 'overmedicalisation' of childbirth which, from my experience, can be very traumatising. That said, it's still important to have expert medical help when things don't go right, which can be often.

This has been a collective effort, and response to the most persistent challenges: high mortality, mistreatment, overmedicalisation, including unnecessary #caesarean.
