A lot of the young men I’ve seen convert are conservative— some of them very influenced by the toxic and generally stupid “Orthobro” online content. But a lot of these men are searching for meaning in an age of high anxiety, eroding in-person 1:1 relationships, and a technophile culture.

I’m going to choose violence today and argue that the tradcath/orthobro obsession with “dignified liturgy” really has nothing to do with the implied theology of the Tridentine Mass or the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom/St. Basil and has everything to do with consuming a different aesthetic

For real. I blew off Henri Nouwen and Richard Rohr for years because I ran in trad/orthobro circles…and then grew up, thank you God!! I am far more joyful in my own skin now than when I was trying to prove something or always on the lookout for ways I might be compromising (as if that was avoidable)
The talk turned to how nice it is to be a plain old ordinary Catholic. Not a trad or a modernist or any particular KIND of Catholic, but just Catholic. Don’t have a crusade. Don’t ty to fit in to a clique. Just try to do your best at being a Catholic.

For real. I blew off Henri Nouwen and Richard Rohr for years because I ran in trad/orthobro circles…and then grew up, thank you God!! I am far more joyful in my own skin now than when I was trying to prove something or always on the lookout for ways I might be compromising (as if that was avoidable)
As someone who grew up as an Orthodox Christian (via Ukie mom) I often found Orthobro converts to be people who were chasing an impossible fantasy rather than interested in cultural reality

Ironically enough I do think when it comes to the Orthodox from the Catholic view you have a bit of that it’s complicated, whereas w Orthodox is present as a set identical view.
