Our #objectoftheweek is this painted silk banner in our collection, a rare survival from Cromwell's state funeral - he died #OnThisDay 3 September 1658. This is one of only 4 such banners that survive of the more than a thousand that were made. #17thCentury

Our #ObjectOfTheWeek is this watercolour by George Yates, which shows the Brunel Museum as it looked when it was a construction site in the 1820s.

On the left is a mural of the tunnelling shield - perhaps to show the method to those who didn't fancy going underground...

Our #ObjectOfTheWeek is this watercolour of a rare, quite accurate depiction of a Thames Tunnel miner. While still idealised — the miner is very clean! — the clothing shown here is the closest to those described in other sources.

As it's #WorldCalligraphyDay, our #ObjectOfTheWeek is this lovely letter from Cromwell's mother Elizabeth, written in July 1643. It's probably the only example of her handwriting and signature - which is lovely and clear (unlike the notation below it!)

Our #ObjectOfTheWeek is this - a drawing of a mystery object! This formed part of the wider set of Thames Tunnel Designs acquired by the Museum in 2017.

Try as we might, we have never been able to decide exactly what it is.

Answers on a postcard! (Or better yet, in the replies)

Here's an unusual new acquisition, as it's a bit of our own history. A copy of our earliest guidebook, produced a few months after we first opened in October 1962. It's fascinating to see how our collection has developed, expanded and improved since then! #ObjectOfTheWeek

Inuit artist Gayle Kabloona has been in the news for calling out UK traveller's claim to be the first woman to cross Nunavut Island on foot (more here www.bbc.com/news/article...)

Rather than focus on the news, I'd like to share some of her art

This week's #ObjectoftheWeek is a collection of X-Ray focus tubes, most of them made by Cuthbert Andrews, who were the sole British maker of x-ray tubes during the 1930's.
Object of the Week
This week's object of the week is a collection of X-Ray focus tubes, most of them made by Cuthbert Andrews, who were the sole British maker of x-ray tubes during the 1930's. Unlike later X-ray tubes, this one has no heated filament. Instead, an electrical discharge was started in the gas inside the tube, causing electrons to be emitted. These electrons create an energy reaction the led to the release of X-rays, which then pass through the glass.

Our #ObjectOfTheWeek is this lovely mid 1600s embroidered purse in our reserve collection. It is reputed to have belonged to a member of the Cromwell family, although the provenace for that it somewhat unclear! It's a beautiful item nonetheless. 🙂 #museums
