They want to be able to run on this in mid-terms, I don't think they understand that they just made all of us stop caring about them getting elected in mid-terms. bsky.app/profile/osit...
Ezra Klein, having spoken to a "dozen or so House and Senate Democrats" over the weekend, says at least some of them worried extending the ACA subsidies would take them off the table as a political issue and wanted Republicans to keep the filibuster.

As far as I'm concerned, the case against working to change the Democratic Party from within through electoral politics collapsed with Mamdani's win last Tuesday. Doesn't mean the left will inevitably win or that it won't be a grueling struggle. But ... I mean, come on.
“Rather than taking over the Democratic Party the same way the right took over the Republican Party, we should take the easier route and just start up a new party ourselves!”

I’m about to fill my pockets with stones and walk into the sea.

The reality though is that they didn't want to win.

They caved cause they wanted to keep the filibuster and their brains were so fucked they thought keeping people's health care high would help them win elections.

This party is beyond redemption.

The key to victory is unifying the establishment around shutting the base out of the nomination process

bsky.app/profile/osit...
Nobody remembers what happened in 2016. The reason Trump won was that the establishment vote was hopelessly split. The fact that there were so many candidates worked in his favor. He doesn't consolidate support in the GOP until the general election and his EC victory.
I watched this bastard cut through seventeen different primary candidates like they were butter and survive several career ending scandals that only juiced his poll numbers further. I called him for the nomination in September 2015, that he had at least a puncher's chance to win. They called me mad.

The insightful part of Coyne's argument without the needless laundering of Ford bsky.app/profile/osit...
Coyne: Old billionaires like Henry Ford did not align with "such a malignant force as Donald Trump" or become "utterly detached from reality."

Ford was a fascist who aligned with Hitler and spread vile antisemitic propaganda so thoroughly that Donald Trump echoes him.

No billionaires.

This is definitely something that merits closer consideration from political entities and parties across the spectrum.

I'd go one further and add in a generation or so of internet discourse, "reality" teevee, and other fun cultural artifacts that cook people's noodles.
bsky.app/profile/osit...
Relatedly, I think we underrate the extent to which Trump is a fully normal politician to young people. There's an abstract awareness that he represents a break from the past, but they don't personally remember it. This year's college freshmen were born in 2006-2007.
I think the Reagan ad is most effective not by the topic but by reminding everyone that presidents don't have to sound like insane morons.

Sigh.

Gonna go watch the new David Osit documentary in a bit. As a reminder, if you haven't seen his documentary Mayor, do so. I legit might have rated it too low at a 4/5 with how much this film has left a lasting impact on me. It's on Kanopy so if you have a library card, it's free to watch.
