We'll have further analysis late morning into the afternoon Saturday, with our 2025 "Playoff Projection Show" scheduled for 6 pm where we give our bracket projections. Knox was seemingly on track to become the first wrestler in Shore Conference history and the fifth in state history to win four NJSIAA state championships.

With a starting lineup composed primarily of underclassmen, there was no doubt that the future was bright for Nutley’s wrestling program after some rough years following Covid. Saturday’s NJSIAA District 9 Tournament served as the latest example that these Maroon Raiders aren’t waiting to bring the program back to levels it hasn’t enjoyed in nearly a decade. Despite falling just short of a team title, Saturday was nothing short of a banner day for the host school as Nutley crowned four district champions, the most it’s had since 2016.

The NJSIAA boys soccer state tournament got underway last week and through the first two rounds of play a familiar storyline has emerged locally. Not only are Harrison and Kearny both on to the semifinals in their respective sections, both longtime state powers have done it in dominant fashion. The Kardinals, seeded second in North 1, Group 4, soundly defeated North Bergen, 5-0, in the first round, then made quick work of Morristown in the quarterfinals, 6-1.

When the Hillsborough baseball team - the nine-seed in Central Jersey Group 4 - hosted 12-seed Montgomery last Tuesday in a sectional semifinal game, it was a surprise. Even if they'd made a run to the finals and won their first sectional title since 2012, the figured they'd be on the road the whole way. They played on the road in their next game, back on Thursday, and after falling behind 6-3 in the fourth, scored ten unanswered runs to beat second-seed Old Bridge 13-6, winning the title, their first in 13 years.

There were 13 high school football games Thursday night, but only seven playoff-eligible games (Ivy Divisions in the Super Football Conference aren't playoff-eligible). Those games didn't have a big impact on the standings, but when combined with the rest of the results to come in Friday and Saturday, they could have some real sway in who makes the postseason and who doesn't.

It was a 3-3 day for the Big Central Conference, as Piscataway, Summit and New Providence were winners in high school football first-round state playoff action Saturday afternoon, while Hillsborough, A.L. Johnson and Plainfield were eliminated. The second-seeded Chiefs were 29-14 winners over seven-seed Plainfield at Kenny Armwood Stadium Saturday, in a "Big Central Game of the Week" presented by Bellamy & Son Paving on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

Last week, under the lights on a cold night in a do-or-die playoff game at Ridge, every time Colonia needed to make a play, a senior stepped up and delivered. Down 6-0 early and back on defense in the second quarter, senior R.J. Wortman's pick-six helped give Colonia its first lead. Down 13-7 late in the first half, senior Julien Jones rumbled in from six yards out to tie the game just before the break.

"Back in the day," as the older folks say, power points were simple. Six points for a win, residuals from your opponents, plus group size. Total it up at the cutoff date, and your teams were seeded. Simple enough. But there was little nuance to it, so the NJSIAA has tweaked the formula in various sports. Power points are still around (somewhat, but for how long?) in high school football.

It's an annual tradition here at Central Jersey Sports Radio. The only minimum set by the NJSIAA is that a team must have at least two wins against NJSIAA members schools.

It's Cutoff Weekend in New Jersey high school football, and we're taking a look at the playoff scenarios for every Big Central team in contention.
