Job offer: PostDoc “Remote Sensing for Biodiversity Monitoring” – Eawag-WSL BiMo Initiative (80-100%, f/m/d) A key component of an effective biodiversity strategy is rapid and scalable monitoring. Eawag and WSL have extensive expertise and experience in novel biodiversity monitoring approaches. The new Biodiversity Monitoring initiative (BiMo) aims to strengthen this research portfolio and generate effective practice implementation. BiMo has a strong focus on method development and outputs with high relevance for stakeholders. In addition to the remote sensing project for which we are recruiting here, BiMo comprises two further projects that will obtain information from eDNA and image analysis, with the joint objective to strengthen capacities at Eawag and WSL for developing and implementing biodiversity monitoring methods. In this project, you will examine the potential and applicability of remote sensing technologies and data (2D, 3D, active and passive sensors on different platforms) to assess and monitor terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity. You will adapt existing methods and available data on national scale to swiftly enhance ongoing monitoring programmes, identify gaps and unsolved issues and design new avenues. You will be actively involved in a large BiMo joint research proposal aimed at third-party funding. You hold a PhD degree in environmental science, remote sensing, computer vision or an equivalent field and have sound ecological knowledge of biodiversity. You work comfortably with statistical computing and scripting languages (e.g. R, Python). You are highly motivated to analyse data using sophisticated methods and tools. Good communication and organisation skills, an excellent team spirit and fluency in German or English with very good knowledge of the other language are mandatory. The project is led by Christian Ginzler (WSL) and Dr. Daniel Odermatt (Eawag). The successful applicant will be based and hired in the group of Christian Ginzler at WSL.

"hallucinations" and mistakes where it is already in use — but more and more our employers are turning to A.l. driven technologies like chatbots, charting, and monitoring software, and in some cases even remote patient observation from a different state — all the while blaming a "nursing shortage" created by dangerously understaffing units across the country and driving dedicated bedside nurses away from our patients. A new, detailed analysis from NNU, using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, shows that nationwide, there are more than a million registered nurses with active licenses who are choosing not to work at the bedside because of the hospital industry's unsafe working conditions. Many of those dangers are posed by over-reliance on unregulated new technologies to justify dangerously low nurse-to-patient ratios, often without the obligation to disclose these practices to patients. No artificial intelligence (A.I.)' system, including automated worker surveillance and management (AWSM)?/ systems and clinical decision support systems (CDSS)}, will ever replace the human expertise and clinical judgement essential to providing the safe, effective, and equitable nursing care that all patients deserve. Nurses embrace, and regularly master, worker-centric technologies that complement bedside skills and improve quality of care for our patients. But we're concerned about certain technologies that are being implemented into hospital and care settings that do neither. The application of A.l. in health care settings must follow these principles in order to ensure quality patient care, safety, and equity. J The right to high-quality person-to-person care. Patients have the right to in-person health care based on their needs and wishes provided by skilled and licensed health care profession-als, in the appropriate settings. The right to health care in-person by a licensed health care professional underlies all other medical care and should not be compromised by uses of A.l. or other technologies that contribute to worker displacement or deskilling. The right to safety. Patients and workers have a right to safety at work or while receiving care. This includes mandatory, pre-market testing and approval of any new technology and ongoing monitoring by a regulatory agency to ensure that it is safe, effective, therapeutic, and equita-ble-the precautionary principle in action. The burden of demonstrating safety should rest with developers and deployers, not patients and their caregivers. Technology is no substitute for appropriate staffing levels for all health care … The right to autonomy. Workers and patients have the right to refuse to participate in data collection and worker surveillance. Patients deserve the right for their health care information to be technology-neutral. Using A.l. to diagnose and treat patients should require informed consent and an opt-in process. The right to collective advocacy for workers and their patients. Health care workers have the right to be consulted and engaged on all policies, procedures, and best practices surrounding the implementation of A.. Union workers must have the opportunity to bargain over whether and how technology should be implemented in the workplace before it is selected or deployed in a health care setting, and all workers have the right to workplace democracy. Workers have the right to understand how the decisions governing their working lives are made —including hiring — and patients have the right to understand how the decisions concerning their care are made, including insurance coverage determinations. Patients are NOT Algorithms Trust Nurses Not Al 1 • Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) A.I. is a machine-based technology that attempts to mimic human intelligence by taking inputs in the form of massive amounts of data, processing them through algorithmic software, and generating outputs from that process. Those outputs may be in the form of predictions, content, recommendations, directions, or decisions.
