honestly, so many "how screwed am I" posts with someone having obliterated an OLED as their first soldering job when it requires professional microsoldering to do it safely and correctly. the other switches are a fine first project but the OLED is literally built different (obfuscated DAT0)

yeah, I don't really work on phones as far as board repair goes.. the micro-est of microsoldering, usually built without servicing/repair in mind, big stakes as it's always important personal data.. I am happy to work on my game consoles and leave those to actual repair shops haha

the switch is a great way to learn microsoldering and board repair! it's well documented by the repair community so it's much more accessible to learn, and it's not too difficult to get broken units for cheap so the stakes are low enough to build your skill and eventually get a win 🦊👍

I'm seeing a ton of tutorials on YT about doing that particular hardmod. I think with a decent microsoldering kit you should be able to do it. Maybe look and see if TronicsFix has a Vita repair vid to get an idea of the teardown?

Update: I GOT THE OLD PORT OFF THR BOARD! I’m really thrilled because I started attaching my wires and that was just not going well. I also had to straight up BATTLE to get the new port in place. BUT IT WORKED! Board level microsoldering WIN!

Take the plunge! Start with one of the cheaper rework stations, that's what I did. It pays for itself after a while and it's really empowering to know you can fix these things. The basics of microsoldering are not that hard, they just need some practice to get repeatable results.

Device has a busted USB-C port. Manufacturer offered to sell me a replacement board, which would be an easy drop-in replacement well within my skillset, but it's oh so tempting to use this as an excuse to try once more to get into microsoldering since the port itself only costs a buck and change.
