Because after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Azerbaijan agreed to double its gas exports to the bloc. By getting it to sign the Global @MethanePledge, the EU can claim that importing "lower emission" Azeri gas is in line with its climate targets 🤯

But the oil and gas part of the Global @MethanePledge, OGMP2.0, has been widely criticised for a) being based on industry self-reporting and therefore likely under-reporting emissions b) not actually leading to methane emissions reductions.
