I had been waiting for months. When I entered the room, the physician was sitting back with his feet up on the table. He looked at my previous findings and said that the case was clear: I had been thoroughly examined and was simply hysterical, which is what he had thought as soon as he saw me. It was so dismissive, really harsh. I felt like a stupid little blonde and couldn't say anything.

It‘s certainly possible that ME/CFS—or perhaps some subtypes of it—new or becoming more prevalent in the eighties. But it‘s also possible that it simply wasn‘t until then that a critical mass of women patients had enough social authority to reject medicine‘s conclusion that their unexplained illness was all in their heads—and there were enough enlightened doctors who believed them. After all, it does seem to be an interesting coincidence that it was just as the large baby boomer generation, the first to have come of age during the women’s movement of the sixties and seventies, began reaching middle adulthood that so many unexplained conditions that predominately affect women and that, it turns out, are quite common—from ME/CFS to fibromyalgia to vulvodynia to IC—rather suddenly appeared on the radar.‘
