Currently listening on my cycling to the excellent #inheritocracy by Dr Eliza Filby. I knew the maths, the societal impact is more insidious.

Dr Eliza Filby is a historian and author of the bestselling book Inheritocracy: It’s Time to Talk About the Bank of Mum and Dad. In conversation with Ash Sarkar, Dr Filby draws on her own life story, growing up in South London with parents who went from communists to Thatcherites in the 1980s. She debunks the common myths we tell ourselves about class and meritocracy, and in doing so, shines a light on the root cause of so much inequality: inherited wealth.

Tell me again about the ‘inheritocracy’ the next time a white, middle class, male radio host uses his pulpit to bully a black working class woman and patronize her about how she doesn’t understand discrimination properly🙄
You don’t recognize your own privilege and entitlement, just pretend to.

It is not meritocracy upon which this nation is built but rather it is inheritocracy, founded and funded by racial capitalism. What we are seeing our federal government doing now is reinforcing these systems of oppression in backlash to changes made to become something different and better.

"Things are now so bad that the vast majority of UK citizens believe that Britain has become an 'inheritocracy', where inheritance - not hard work - is the only way to get on in life." @liambyrnemp.bsky.social in his book 'The Inequality of Wealth'. A very good read👍🏼

Muy interesante y sospecho que esta tendencia puede seguir cogiendo fuerza por puros factores demográficos. Tengo pendiente leer Inheritocracy, que trata justamente de este tema

😁 It’s true! Can you guess what happens next month? “Inheritocracy” and “Nuclear War: A Scenario”, also topics from a while ago on the pod when the hardback was fresh on the shelves, both finally arrive in shiny new paperback editions 🤓

The average price of an Australian house has officially surpassed $1 million. Does that mean only the people who inherit money from their parents can actually get onto the property ladder now?

- "we had double digit interest rates at one point!" ignore the facts (bi monthly pay rises during that period). That generation were blessed in a way no subsequent generation have been. This has lead to the current situation- the "inheritocracy", where many will only own a property via inheritance.

The rich get richer: Australia is at risk of becoming an inheritocracy
There is a record number of billionaires in Australia … now home to 161 billionaires, up 11 from last year
In 1984 that list had just two people with the equivalent wealth of $1 billion in today’s money

The richest people in this country aren’t just getting richer, they’re also doing it faster than the rest of us. And there’s one key reason why.

As many countries see the rise of a new "inheritocracy," estate, inheritance, and gift (EIG) taxes are declining. But there's a lot of variation across countries' EIG tax. Learn how to visualize data on the GC Wealth Project site (@stone-lis@bsky.social)
