In honor of Veteran's Day, President Elizabeth Bradley writes about amplifying veteran voices in higher education in an Albany Times Union op-ed.* (*article behind paywall) https://bit.ly/47MWKjl
Commentary: More than ever, college campuses need veterans’ voices
Institutions must do more not just to bring vets into higher education, but to make them part of the campus community. The benefits flow both ways.

One important note
About private schools...
In most cases,
Because they are private,
They are free to reject applicants
Unlike public schools.
So they can reject
Special Ed students,
Leaving public schools
With a higher percentage
Of SE students
And a higher average per-student cost.

My local rural school district is set to lose over $700,000 a year under the new school funding formula, while the Governor is funding private religious schools with taxpayer vouchers.
What a scam…

It’s funny the party that’s partially nationalizing our biggest companies, pushing state control of higher ed curriculum, and creating a straight line between newspapers and the Oval Office, is now saying that it’s patriotic to labor for the state for free

My #hottake (that no one asked for) since hearing the reactions to the fed shenanigans (LC, IMLS, etc) is that only a subset of librarians 1) knows that the IMLS does 2) knows what LOC is or does and 3) understands much about federal funding for GLAMs or higher ed. Library schools must do better.

The more I think about the angrier I get. This is a state legislator who pretends to care about bias in higher ed explicitly saying that some science should be disqualifying. This is very scary.
Good to know that the little wiener in the legislature got mad because one of the candidates for president at ISU believes that climate change is real

I appreciate that folks who don't work in an ed school are discovering or re-discovering the reading wars today on the skies (complimentary). It's my big example of why higher ed scholar fights have nothing on k12. That and the math wars out in northern California.

Meanwhile Orban has given MAGA important lessons in de-democratization, authoritarian-oligarchic asset consolidation, blurring the line between public/party media, using state procurement systems to benefit family and personal friends, destroying higher ed & replacing with ersatz pro-regime training

We are in this weird spot in higher ed where there are so many students that want to be lawyers but hate and refuse to read and write. I don’t get it. 🙃

I don't know a single higher Ed institution that isn't engaging with #genAI n some way -- sometimes those in the institutions are engaging with it in a way totally contrary to the fully uncritically embracing mantra that their own institutions seem to have adopted.
I don’t know how many times I can read takes about “institutions have to engage with gen AI!!” When what they mean is “fully embrace it with little reflection.” Because apparently “having lots of discussions and pointing out its flaws and problematic areas” doesn’t count as “engaging” with it.

I’m not sure how higher ed works there, tbh. Would love to know what factors you considered when deciding whether and where to go, though

It would not be tagged as decorative because it's not just a wall of text, or a logo. I work in accessibility in higher ed.
There is an image to be described. It may be done succinctly, but don't just deny access because you don't think it's important.

What's pathetic is nearly a full Congress [both houses] allow him to do all this.

As part of a total restructuring of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, all of the departments are being dissolved, and all of the programs and faculty are being regrouped into 3 schools within the college. It sux, and it will likely hasten my departure from higher ed.

Given his emphasis on toughness, T, so I hear, is preparing a major new higher ed initiative that, instead of diversity and inclusion, which was so Obama after all, will feature offices of adversity and exclusion. Keep your eyes peeled for ‘em.

Yeah very sad. The proportion of people who won the academic career lottery who came away embittered feels surprisingly high. I sort of get it given the general state of higher ed but it also seems like many bitter winners mostly respond in selfish (and sometimes actively hateful) ways unfortunately
