Maybe I should resurrect the "Neolithic modernity" stuff I keep taking out of my ceramics chapter. #HalafTwitter

#HalafTwitter Oh no! Very sad news! My condolences to everyone at the excavations at Kaman Kalehöyük, home of a legendarily strong team (and even a Japanese garden!).
Kaman Kalehoyuk: The death of renowned Japanese archaeologist Sachihiro Omura has been announced, aged 75.

Very sorry to hear the news of the death of legendary archaeologist #PattyJoWatson, who, among other work, co-directed the first excavation of a Late Neolithic/Halaf site that held to Processual archaeology's methodological standards at Girikihaciyan in SE Türkiye. #HalafTwitter

Really wish I could talk to Olivier Nieuwenhuyse right now. It's not fair. #HalafTwitter 😪

What's your favorite article on the 8.2 ky Event in Western Asia?? It seems like it had such a profound impact on the Late Neolithic, but it's weirdly underrpresented (I think?) in the lit. Anxious to hear your thoughts or lit recs.
Was just reading a ch from Ian Gilligan's book hmm. #HalafTwitter

Looking at the 2022 R. Matthews and Fazeli Nashli open access book on Iran for JWare references, and found these citations of the Henricksons. The first time I met Bob I was in college and he was working at the Borders Books on Rockville Pike. He was so kind to me. <3 #HalafTwitter

I get to talk about the Nebra Sky Disk today in my first ever archaeoastronomy/ cultural astronomy class lecture! #HalafTwitter

Are there any Natufian specialists out there who could answer some questions for me, please? #HalafTwitter

#HalafTwitter Amazing!
PS friend was at Karahantepe yesterday, HOT D**M I don't know what to make of it.

OK someone somewhere posted something--maybe on a different site--about an obsidian mirror *with a handle* from a Neolithic site the other day. Where was it???? #HalafTwitter

#HalafTwitter Old friends from Domuztepe! Some of the only images we have showing how Halaf people depicted themselves.
Halaf pottery is indeed extraordinary @sm9eb.bsky.social 😍

I know I’m not team bovid, but it would take a heart of stone not to admire this 10,600 year old Aurochs from Vig in Denmark. #archaeology 🏺

I feel like it's 1930 in so many different ways. 👀

BUT check out the quotes by Heggerty about his competing hypothesis in the Times article.
I'm surprised he didn't bring up our little bulls.
February 5, 2025 at 8:36 PM
Here's a question: are there Neolithic populations anywhere who were building their round houses inside the aurochs "bull pits" described here?? It seems like that's something we might be able to figure out stratigraphically. How big were they? #HalafTwitter

Oooh looks like there are some new spicy Halaf articles out! I haven't read it yet, but I'm guessing the one by Garfinkel (of Dancing at the Dawn of Agriculture) on secret societies will be...either really cool or really divisive, depends on how he actually engaged the anthro lit. #HalafTwitter

Per my post the other day, and the Pre-Print I posted last week.
I repeat: it really is 1930 in so many ways. (The little blurb from Reich at the end of the Times press release claiming that it actually proves past diversity failed to mention their Yamnaya pop replacement pubs.)

Another day, another Harvard genetics paper on the whereabouts of an (I really stress this) purely *imaginary “Indo-European homeland” - published in Nature, to the applause of alt-right and white supremacists the world over, but of course, all in the name of “good science”..

Feeling extremely sad over the end of my latest teaching contract, my lab, and my great students, which I loved, and the big hopeless void of whatever comes next.

Please tell me some interesting archaeology, astronomy, or critter news to take my brain off this hellscape of a world. #HalafTwitter 🖤

You know what I love? I love when certain official Insta pages for certain very large & important excavations in Türkiye post pics of event stages w/rows of men & not a single woman in sight. A site famous for women's representation but modern women are invisible in public discourse!! #HalafTwitter

MARCH. MAMMAL. MADNESS. #2026MMM
I've learned so much from so many different people in archaeology, astronomy, env sci, Tweeps in Türkiye, so many different areas! I've connected with #HalafTwitter, way back Arecibo Cats, shared my beloved Cmdr Orion's life with her many friends, & now Italy.
Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?

I've been discussing w/my students that there are 3 real stories w/the SW Asian Neolithic:
--Pyrotech (bread, plaster, ceramics, metal)
--Something shifting in the way people conceptualize both their relationships with Nature and gender (part of the same thing)
--Collapse at 8.2 ky
