For day three of #archInk prompt: flint
I created a digital collage of tools used during flint knapping and the by products spreading around the production zone: flakes and blades.

Where to begin? I need at least 4 samples of each novaculite & Big Fork chert: 2 raw & 2 for heat treating. That will give a comparison of each color before & after thermal alteration. #Archaeology #rocks

The 1st 5 flakes removed from 1 side shows it is a multicolor jasper. The cortex is off-white, then under that is a dark gray layer abruptly changing to a well-defined thin pale tan layer. Below the tan is strong brown mottled with maroon. 2/ #flintknapping #Archaeology

I found more of the black & gray novaculite I had lying around here. This piece shows very well the 2 different layers. #lithics #rocks #archaeology #flintknapping

In fact, we were able to refit about 20 flakes of one distinctly identifiable chert material at Site 22PR533. We had about 8 distinct materials that showed that we had only 15 cm of vertical migration from bioturbation.

Here is progress knapping the pebble. 4/ #archaeology #flintknapping

The grainy red jasper flakes better & there is a luster change. Now if I can just thermally alter a larger piece without it heat fracturing & spalling. #flintknapping #archaeology

Good idea. I know both those guys. I might also try some of the local flintknapping clubs. A few of those ppl play fast and loose with knapping where they maybe should not. Currently, the site form is off for agency review. They may have se insights, too.

Two abraders I use for #flintknapping. The white sandstone abrader (R) I've been using for decades. The ferruginous sandstone abrader (L) I started using after I misplaced the white one. #archaeology

Idk why, but around this time of year I always want to start flintknapping.

I need to bring back an old hobby like I need another hole in my head, but in a trepanation kind of a way

Recovered more of my lithic material from the old shed. Here are 2 different banded cherts. I don't remember the source locations, but I believe it to be north-central Florida. #Flintknapping #Archaeology

The other day I sliced my finger with this white quartz flake. This afternoon I donned some gloves & finished #flintknapping it into a ca. 1500 BC-AD 600 Palmillas point. #Archaeology

Ann & I went to a big rock sale some 55 mi away today. To many rocks, never, but still somewhat overwhelming.
The highlight was this red jasper. While jasper usually is smooth & dense, there's a type that has coarse quartz particles. This is that jasper. #rocks #Flintknapping #archaeology

I do some flintknapping but it's pretty sporadic.

I am often asked what I do with the flakes from flintknapping when making a large tool (and am occasionally accused of being wasteful). But many are saved for arrowheads or other tools, while others are saved for workshops so students can practice making scrapers and flake tools.

It's great fun :) I was taught by Karl Lee, master flintknapper and all round top bloke. You can see his stuff at www.primitive-technology.co.uk

Late Woodland to Mississippian period Mississippian Triangular (ca. AD 900-1700) arrowhead made on heat-treated Florida fossiliferous chert. Mississippian Triangulars go by many regional names (Madison, Hamilto, etc.), with variations on sizes, bases & lateral edges. #Flintknapping #Archaeology
