It has "market value" of one trillion based on, a lot of excitable and not accurate estimates about how the company will perform. It's in the process of losing the EV battle.

This usually has been the main argument of the anti-EV populus. And there is a small point to it, of course. A country, where majority of ⚡️ is coal or oil based production, the EVs are less clean. But it has been still proven, that even in that case, EVs are cleaner.

Theory: really successful innovations were based much more on insights into consumer demand than technological supply/possibility. E.g.:
- punters would buy an EV if it were cool enough
- people will trust online shopping
- a computer in every house

The average EV driver would pay an extra £250 a year, compared to how the average owner of a petrol or diesel car pays about £600 in fuel duty, the people briefed on the government’s plans said. Drivers of hybrid cars, which combine electric power with an internal combustion engine, would have lower per mile charges than zero-emission vehicles. The Daily Telegraph first reported the story. The plans would not involve on-road tracking of EVs, with drivers instead facing annual payments based on estimates of how many miles they expect to travel.

Based on performance an EV is basically better. You're left with ideas of the 'character' and 'charm' of boiling oil and water, repetitive explosions, noise, smell and general lack of torque and efficiency.

Absolutely *massive* news flow over night, mostly from earnings. Since the US reports last night, here's what happened:
Snapshot. US equity index futures are slightly worse than flat after an extremely busy night of earnings from across the global economy as well as a constructive data day in Europe with a kicker of trade optimism from the US & China. Yields are slightly higher, and the dollar is at session highs as fold and silver are near flat. Global Economic Scorecard. China. Following a 90-minute bilateral conversation overnight, President Trump announced a de-escalation of the Chinese trade fight with some terms confirmed by Beijing. It’s too early to definitively say what was agreed, but here’s what we understand each side will get based on media reports. China will face a lower “fentanyl” tariff (from 20% to 10%), and the US will not implement a 100% tariff previously threatened; the post-agreement tariff rate will be 47%. An expansion of entities subject to export controls on chips announced by the US in September will also be postponed. In exchange, the US receives resumed purchases of soybeans, a commitment by China to purchase energy, and a reversal of critical mineral export controls. We emphasize that from an economic perspective in the context of both the headline tariff rate and overall bilateral trade relationship this is an incremental development. It does lay the groundwork for further negotiation and reduces the odds of downside risks, so in that context is positive, but both countries are effectively tinkering around the edges. APAC Earnings. Starting with Korea, Samsung Electronics (no US listing) reported overnight in the wake of very strong numbers from SK Hynix (no US listing) yesterday. Q3 adjusted operating profit beat by 16% and adjusted net beat by 29% on a 2% revenue beat. Management continues to credit AI for the “strong” market conditions and an increase in HBM demand next year. On the downside, the mobile market is expected to be “roughly flat” while overall memory price competition is increasing. Shares rose 2% in Seoul. APAC Earnings (con’t). Anothe… APAC Earnings (con’t). Before we move on from PCRHY, we also note that Nikkei reported prior to the earnings news that management plans to cut EV battery prices by a whopping 40% per unit by 2035, which illustrates the deflation pressure on the space and how cheap high performance batteries are getting. Japanese auto OEM Nissan (ADR NSANY) also updated guidance, estimating a first half 2026 (6 months ended September) loss of ¥30bn and full year operating losses ¥275bn; that entire loss is driven by tariff costs of ¥275bn. Chinese earnings are also in full swing with reports from the three largest banks after the bell. Agricultural Bank of China (ADR ACGBY) reported Q3 net interest income 1% higher than expected as provisions were 9% higher than analysts though. The NPL ratio made a new low at 1.27%. Pre-tax net beat by 3%. Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ADR IDCBY) reported a 7% pre-tax net income beat with NPLs stable at cycle lows of 1.33%. The coverage ratio for provisions over NPLs was 217%, higher than the 212% estimate. Finally China Construction Bank (ADR CICHY) reported a 7% net income beat with provisions more than one-third lower than estimated. The NPL ratio followed ACGBY and IDCBY to new cycle lows at 1.33%. All three lenders confirm a stable credit picture in China despite economic weakness overall. APAC Earnings (con’t). The largest steel producer in China, Baoshan Iron & Steel (no US listing) reported a 5% revenue miss with adjusted net income 9% below estimates as the pressure on the Chinese industrial economy continues. On the other hand, adjusted net was more than double year-ago levels. Solar giant LONGi Green Energy Technology (no US listing) reported net losses 6% narrower than expected, with that loss marking a seventhstraight quarter in the red. On the other hand, losses were down 30% YoY and have narrowed on that basis for three straight quarters. That also demonstrates some of the pressure coming off the green technology space in Chi… Europe Earnings (con’t). The largest report is integrated energy company Shell (ADR SHEL) beat adjusted operating income estimates by 24% thanks to strong profitability in gas, upstream production, and marketing. Even the renewables segment recorded a beat with net income more than 5x estimates. Cashflow from operations fell 17% YoY but beat by 12%. A $3.5bn buyback (1.6% of market cap) was announced. Management noted chemicals “continue to face challenges” and sees further crude oil oversupply next year. Shares are flat in London. TotalEnergies (ADR TTE) also reported. The French energy major produced 3% more oil than expected and reported strong price realization, but both metrics for its gas business missed as LNG operating income missed by 12% while other segments beat. Cashflow from operations rose 16% YoY and came in slightly above estimates. Management expects to continue divesting North America renewables assets. Shares are -3% in Paris. Electrification play Schneider Electric (ADR SBGSY) reported organic revenue growth of 8.3% YoY, missing the 8.7% estimate. While Energy Management (which supplies a wide range of key electrical supplies) saw organic growth of 9.7% YoY that missed the 9.8% estimate; Industrial Automation organic growth beat by 2.8%-pt rising 6.0% YoY. That said, the results pointed to no slowdown in AI-driven demand as the North America geography of that segment beat. Shares are -4% in Paris. Europe Earnings (con’t). Brewery Anheuser-Busch InBev (ADR BUD) beat adjusted EPS by 3% on a 1% revenue miss driven by volumes 2% lower than analysts expected. Volumes fell 3.7% YoY globally versus -2.6% expected with price +4.6% YoY (+4.3% estimated). That said, North America volumes fell less than expected, -2.7% YoY versus -3.8% estimated, with APAC the big miss (organic revenues -9% YoY versus a 4% decline expected). Shares are +2% in Amsterdam. Spanish bank BBVA (ADR BBVA) reported net interest income 5% above estimates while trading revenues misse… Europe Earnings (con’t). They also guided breakeven net free cash flow in automotive (analysts expect almost €1bn) though management sees a “good chance” it will end up positive. The good news is chip supply shortages at Dutch semis company Nexperia will have “no impact” on the VWAGY’s German production. Cost savings are progressing with a target of €6bn/year savings by 2030. One area of strength: EVs. VWAGY deliveries in that category are +42% YTD with share at 11% versus 8% last year. Shares are up 1% in Munich. Peer auto OEM Stellantis (STLA) reported a 1% revenue beat and reiterated second half guidance but “anticipates incurring charges” in the second half driven by “regulatory, geopolitical, macro-economic and other external and internal developments”. That specter cast a pall over results despite cutting its estimate for annual tariff costs by one-third to €1bn. Shares are -5% in US pre-market. Finally, we note beleaguered advertising company WPP (ADR WPP). Management again cut the revenue outlook, seeing full year comparable adjusted revenues down 5.5% to 6.0% versus a -3% to -5% forecast previously. That metric was -5.9% YoY in Q3 versus -5.7% estimated. The advertising agency is getting pounded by both reduced spending on marketing (though that wasn’t visible in Meta, META results last night) and the rise of AI which clients are using to cut marketing costs that traditionally WPP capture. Shares are down 13% in London (-74% from February 2022 highs). US Earnings. Eli Lilly (LLY) beat adjusted EPS by 23% on revenue 10% higher than expected driven by a 19% beat for Mounjaro and 7% beat for Zepbound. Total obesity segment revenues in the US market beat by 6% as the company’s formulations gather steam. Full year revenue forecasts were raised 4% at the midpoint while full year adjusted EPS forecasts were raised by a similar amount. b) The toolbox: the EU now uses border adjustments (carbon, foreign-subsidies rules, EV probes). Not labour tariffs but they normalize non-classic measures.
c) law vs rhetoric. In WTO law, dumping = price discrimination, not low wages. A labour-based tariff would be novel and contentious.
